RobinAnn Posted February 20, 2017 #1 Share Posted February 20, 2017 So, over Christmas and New Years this year we are doing a full transit of the Panama Canal on the Coral Princess. It's a 15 day cruise so we'll have three formal nights. Looking for opinions on when they might be. Would Princess know the days this far out? Here's the itinerary: Thursday, December 21, 2017 Fort Lauderdale Friday, December 22, 2017 At Sea Saturday, December 23, 2017 At Sea Sunday, December 24, 2017 Aruba Monday, December 25, 2017 Cartagena, Colombia Tuesday, December 26, 2017 Panama Canal - Full Transit Wednesday, December 27, 2017 At Sea Thursday, December 28, 2017 Puntarenas, Costa Rica Friday, December 29, 2017 San Juan Del Sur, Nicaragua Saturday, December 30, 2017 At Sea Sunday, December 31, 2017 Huatulco, Mexico Monday, January 01, 2018 At Sea Tuesday, January 02, 2018 Puerto Vallarta, Mexico Wednesday, January 03, 2018 At Sea Thursday, January 04, 2018 At Sea Friday, January 05, 2018 Los Angeles
fishywood Posted February 20, 2017 #2 Share Posted February 20, 2017 Reformatted for legibility: Thursday, December 21, 2017 Fort Lauderdale Friday, December 22, 2017 At Sea Saturday, December 23, 2017 At Sea Sunday, December 24, 2017 Aruba Monday, December 25, 2017 Cartagena, Colombia Tuesday, December 26, 2017 Panama Canal - Full Transit Wednesday, December 27, 2017 At Sea Thursday, December 28, 2017 Puntarenas, Costa Rica Friday, December 29, 2017 San Juan Del Sur, Nicaragua Saturday, December 30, 2017 At Sea Sunday, December 31, 2017 Huatulco, Mexico Monday, January 01, 2018 At Sea Tuesday, January 02, 2018 Puerto Vallarta, Mexico Wednesday, January 03, 2018 At Sea Thursday, January 04, 2018 At Sea Friday, January 05, 2018 Los Angeles Standard formula is: first sea day (12/22) plus last sea day other than final night of cruise (01/03); other night(s) arbitrary when more than two. But a cruise covering both Christmas and New Year's is not standard. Given New Year's Day is a sea day I would lean strongly to the night before as a formal night (no reason not to stay up past midnite). And Christmas Eve is Aruba which I gather is a half day morning call (depart from at 12:30 or 1:00) which makes it likely as well. Whether having both the 24th and 31st as formal nights means (1) either the early or late formal night will be eliminated; or (2) you will actually have four formal nights [unlikely but should be in the back of your mind] has certainly not been determined yet. In fact it will likely not be decided by the various onboard departments if either or both of the 24th and 31st will be formal until the deadline for the Welcome Aboard Patter going to press just before you board on the 21st. The Planner inside you will just have to chill until you board.
RobinAnn Posted February 20, 2017 Author #3 Share Posted February 20, 2017 Thanks for the reformat fishywood. I was working it and the forum said it didn't post, but obviously it did. You are thinking the same way I was re: Christmas Eve and NYE. I guess I'll just have to be patient. ;)

wishfulone Posted February 20, 2017 #5 Share Posted February 20, 2017 We did a cruise around Sth American over Christmas a few years ago. To fit in with the port visits Christmas Day itself was not formal but NYE was. It really doesn't matter on such a holiday season cruise. The ship is decorated, the crew sing carols in the atrium on Christmas Eve, there are special little decorated biscuits, and a traditional dinner menu. If you're trying to choose special outfits just pack it all and choose once you're on board. Have a wonderful cruise. Wish we were coming with you!
