Cruise Ship Jobs and Staff

On the topic of passengers perspective of the crew, I don't really count myself as an expert. I have only been on one cruise and it was quite short (8 nights). I did notice that the crew didn't seem to be encouraged to socialise with the passengers - this was mentioned on another thread (changes on the Sun since oct 05). We only got to speak to the crew during specific activities and then afterwards they were nowhere to be seen. It's a pitty because I would have liked to have had more interaction with the crew. Do you interact much with the passengers Lulu?

i interacted with passengers during the theme nights and so on like with the activities. but when your off duty its lyk your break time even though if someone wanted to talk or anything lyk that then of course it no prob. but relationships with passengers is frowned upon even though i knew a few guys who didnt mind the odd fling. however, the crew bar is the place where we go to get away from all the hustle a bustle of you passengers! so yeh not much else really happens . the activites are fun though so of u guys were quite witty

I take it the "crew bar" is in one of the parts of the ship where passengers are not allowed? Do the staff have a large number of facilities, appart from the passengers - like dinning rooms, laundry rooms etc ? I remember when we first got onboard the Sun and the captain made his announcements, he made a point of saying -

"area's of the ship that say "staff only" are strictly off limits to passengers. Even if you are invited to enter by a crew member  you must not enter these area's". Mmmmmm, I wonder why a staff member would invite a passenger to enter a staff only area  , I thought that was pretty funny:p .

yeh on the sun the crew bar is underneath the lowest deck that passengers can go on but if you look down you can see another deck so thats it. yeh passengers aren't allowed even if invited wink wink.

the cabins are also away from passeanger cabins just for legalities i think they said once

Could have quite an unpleasant experience luvvin. Thankfully you didn't go with him.

We were invited down to join in a big crew party one on our last cruise. We nearly went but decided we'd stay up in the Legends. We were having a blast.:D He wasn't trying to pick us up either, it was myself and DH.

on my first cruise that also happened to me and i was scared by it.

i thought it was really inappropriate.

and a cabin steward wouldn't normally go into a kitchen so i think that guy was a bit suss.

then on my next cruise i snubbed all the waiter and cabin staff and acted lyk they were below me just to make sure they new it was not going to happen. it seems kind of harsh but after the last experience i didnt want my cruise ruined.

Funnily enough, a couple on our dinner table, were invited by the captain, up to the bridge for a little bit of an inside tour. I somehow don't think there was anything kinky in that proposal, but they ended up not going anyway, because we had some rough weather with "cyclone Jim" and also the missing passengers. They were really dissapointed. I would be too! That was one thing I would have loved to do, have a tour of places like "the bridge" and "the engine room". I have a facination about monstrous mechanical things and I think the engine rooms would be really interesting. Also just seeing how the ship functioned.

It has been mentioned on here before that if you go to the Purser's desk and ask, a bridge tour can be arranged. Just be discrete and leave it for a few days!

hi all

new to this board, i wasnt a dance captain and my name isnt ryzy, just a standard internet name, but i did work on the Sky last year as a dancer (june-dec)

im sorry to bring this up, but after reading the info given by Lulu, it is very different to what i experienced (pay, conditions, employment)

All Dancers do not work for P&O or Princess, but infact for an entertainment company based out of Sydney. We are "sub-contracted" onto a ship as a dancer/cruise staff. after a contract is completed, there is no off time. you have simply finished your contract and no longer work for them until they ask you back.

i could go on and on, but alot of what was said is very different.

Hey Lulu... what are the conditions like on the Disney ships? i hear there is no alcohol consumption allowed for crew, and the vessels are monitored by video systems? is that true?

all that being said, i also went on as a Punter from the 28th Jan (i think thats the day we left) until the 9th of feb back on the sky and i have to say after 17 odd cruises on that ship, it was by far the best!!!!

the crowd was all in there 20s... not many oldies on it... the starlight nightclub was full everynight and kicked on until dawn sometimes.

Kareoke in the Legends bar... so funny... archie the waiter was dancing with some stripper punters...

best cruise ever.... although i am looking forward to doing some princess cruises later this year!

I did wonder about some of the things posted as they were different to what we had previously been told (I think a few of us had some doubts) but it is nice to hear someone in the know confirm our thoughts, thanks!:)

Hi Lulu (if you are still around!)

Have been reading through all the previous replies to this thread and saw that you are going to work for Disney. I did a contract with them a few years ago. Are you going on the Magic or the Wonder? When do you leave?

due to the many doubts about my career i will no longer be posting on this board to avoid further confusion. I will be leaving in a weeks time to travel to the U.S anyway to begin my new job on the Magic.

i do feel offended that everyone had to be secretively keeping these doubts about me and should have asked me to confirmed my job. which i would have.

don't worry i hope you all enjoy your future cruises on P&O.

P.S i hope none of the P&O ships break down again while any of you are on it.

sorry just thought i'd make a correction.

i began my work in the british fleet from which you can obtain employment though their website and then since i was travelling in the UK was able to go to an interview and audition.

i got transfered to P&O australia and was only there ( P&O australia) one contract lasting 8 months
