When on Nassau, we did a guided tour with a taxi driver (Chris...highly recommended). Hope these will be helpful in your planning! Feel free to ask questions. I'll try to check back every couple of days for a while. Merry Christmas! Chantal
hilltopfamily Posted December 24, 2005 #2 Share Posted December 24, 2005 Thanks for sharing the pictures! Loved them. :) We'll be in Nassau on Jan. 18 and we'd like to see Atlantis. Can you describe how you went there/did you book something or just go on your own, what the cost was, how you arranged it, etc.? Would love to know all the details. Thanks! Bunkie103 Posted December 25, 2005 #3 Share Posted December 25, 2005 Thanks for the pics. I keep hearing how Nassau is nasty....looks darn nice to me. By chance do you remember how much tax free alcohol you are allowed to bring back? Thanks.
KINGBOBOFTHENORTH Posted December 25, 2005 #4 Share Posted December 25, 2005 Hilltop family: You can get to Atlantis by taking a regular taxi or by water taxi. Regular taxi takes you right to the hotel entrance while the water taxi takes you to the foot of the Paradise Island Bridge and then you have to walk the final couple blocks. You can visit the casino and shops inside Atlantis at no charge. To visit The Digs (underground tunnels and aquariums) costs around $30 per person. You can't visit or use the pool/water slide facilities without being a guest of Atlantis or the nearby Comfort Suites. Bunkie103: I believe the duty free allowance back to the U.S. is 1 litre per adult and this is true whether you buy it in the Bahamas or in the ship duty free store. On our last cruise the ship store was actually a little cheaper than Nassau and you didn't have to carry your purchase around with you. Check ship prices first then check in-town prices while you're there and only buy if it's worthwhile. I believe Americans can bring back a second litre dutyfree if it's made in the Bahamas. Not alot of liquor is made in the Bahamas. But even if you bring back two or three bottles of your favorite, the U.S. duty is nominal and still cheaper than buying at home. And often U.S. Customs will waive the duty but do make sure you declare that you're over the 1 bottle limit. BobK/Orlando

luv10us Posted December 26, 2005 #8 Share Posted December 26, 2005 Going to be cruising on NCL Sun from Miami on the 17th to nassau. We are also interested in Atlantis but am a little confused on how you book a room to use the pools etc. Comfort inn has a 3 pm check in. Do they have a early check in for day use? If you want to share cost of a room we can work something out Just 2 in cabin 0104

If you want to share cost of a room we can work something out Just 2 in cabin 0104 Hi there, luv10us. I went to a couple websites and priced out the Comfort Inn but decided against it for us because I think my cruisemates (3 other gal friends/relatives) are more interested in just seeing the resort than they are in sitting on the beach and using the swimming facilities (pools/slides). I think I found prices for about $200 or $250 for a day. Not bad if you had 4 people going who wanted to use all those amenities. However, with just the 2 of you that makes it quite a bit more per person. I believe Comfort Inn lets you "check in" early and receive the passes or armbands/bracelets or whatever it is they use to designate that you have full access to Atlantis. Hopefully others here can comment on the accuracy of that and/or give full details. I think I read on a couple threads that you can "check in" there in the morning, say at 9:00 or 10:00? although they won't have your room ready for you at that time. We want to do some exploring and site-seeing in Nassau, including the straw market and other shopping and historic areas, so we'll just spend a bit of time at Atlantis. We'll either just see what we can for free, or perhaps pay the fee to take in the "digs". Sorry, and I hope you find someone else who could share the expense of the room at Comfort Inn. I'm sure you'll have a great time there, however you work it out! :)

flashdog_1 Posted January 5, 2006 #13 Share Posted January 5, 2006 Correction re customs and amount of liquor a US citizen may bring back to the states. You only get to have more than one litre if you purchased it in the Virgin Islands and other US territories (Guam and American Samoa only), NOT BAHAMAS. You were probably thinking of the extra litre you can bring back from the Virgin Islands if it was made in the Virgin Islands, meaning 6 bottles instead of the usual 5 you may bring back from the Virgin Islands. For instance, your 6th bottle has to be VI Rum but the first 5 can be any alcohol, all duty free: http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0004581.html

We have been to nassau before (april) but our next cruise to the Bahamas is in November. Was the water warm enough to go in? Unfortunately, I think we were there on a bad day. It would have been warm if it wasn't for the WIND! Our whole trip was pretty windy and cold. It was nice and sunny though. DH and the kids swam anyway and said the water was warm, but did not want to get out! However, I've done a cruise in November to the Western Carrib that was VERY warm. I think it depends. Also, the driver we hired in Nassau said they have about 6 weeks of "winter" that start in mid December. Have fun on your cruise! C

There is a great website www.wunderground.com where you can click on Trip Planner and then type in your place and planned trip dates and get the average highs and lows/humidity/cloud cover, etc. In the Bahamas vacation guide they say the water temps never go below 72 degrees. This may not be warm enough for some, but for this New England girl it's just fine! :)

I have been to several different ones and cannot get good pics. No flash turns out dark, flash it bounces off the glass.
BooBooMonkey Posted February 18, 2006 Author #17 Share Posted February 18, 2006 I'm not sure what we did different. DH has a decent digital camera, and we probably did not use the flash (I honestly don't remember). They may have special glass there? It is relatively bright inside the acquarium compared to the walkway where you stand to take the pictures...maybe that had something to do with it? Good luck with your pix and have fun on your cruise! C
rburns44 Posted February 19, 2006 #18 Share Posted February 19, 2006 In Hawaii at the Maui Ocean Center I was told that in to take good pics of an aquarium you should shoot at an angle- not straight on. I did that and it seemed to work. You might try it! Becky
