Caribbean travel insurance.

Hi I’m from the uk & i have or existing medical  conditions. Cystic fibrosis since birth, 5 years post double lung transplant, 3 years post thyroid cancer & removal of my thyroid & insulin diabetic since 1999, well controlled.  I am well though despite what I have. 

 

I have tried 4 places so far they are all over £1200.  I was I was in Florida in may 2018 for two weeks & it was only £120 for both my husband & I.   I asked why it was so much & she said it could be more people have claimed on their insurance than people who went to Florida.  I am wondering if it has anything to do with all the bad weather they’ve had in the Caribbean.

When/if you post there, please make sure that in the body of your post/questions, you mention which country you are from.  That can be overlooked if it isn't "front and center", and the types of travel insurance can vary *greatly* from country to country.

 

Because I'm in - and familiar with the policies of - the USA, I can't help much with any of insurers, policies, or brokers, unfortunately.

 

But there will be others who have more familiarity with the types of coverage in the UK (?), and perhaps also pricing.

 

Perhaps you could also include whether you are looking for coverage for possible medical costs while traveling or trip cancellation costs, or both?

 

The policies we get here in the USA (and there are lots of other choices here, too) don't distinguish where one is traveling to... or at the least, we haven't encountered that.

A couple years ago I was involved in an accident while on a cruise. In reality, the medical was not the issue. It was the air evacuation. The travel insurance company called the doctor at the local hospital attempting to locate someone that could patch me up in Grenada. Neither the General Hospital or private hospitals could take care of my broken hip, thus I was flown back to Fort Lauderdale in one of those tiny jets with barely space for pilot, co-pilot, two medics, me on a stretcher and my personal items that would fit.

 

When I inquired about the cost, the medics told me it was cheap, probably $25,000. However, to Europe could run as high as $100,000. Later, when all the claims were being settled, an insurance agent complained to me that my medical insurance had restrictions on transportation and would not cover that flight. I do not know which insurance company paid for my flight and escort from Fort Lauderdale to my home town; only that the Travel insurance paid for the flight from Grenada to Fort Lauderdale.

 

I do not know about travel insurance in your area, however most of ours has a clause to pay after our regular medical insurance pays. In my case, my medical covered the majority of the medical cost. Thus the travel insurance did not get stuck with surgery and other medical expenses.

 

Regardless, get the insurance, do not leave home without it. Relax and have a wonderful cruise,

Thanks you for your replies, I just had my second cataracts done so was unable to get on line for a week or so.

You need to ring around and get a few quotes as costs vary a lot. For a few years we had travel insurance with Stay and Go, but have now changed to AllClear who are underwritten by Mapfre, a large Spanish company.

 

we get an annual policy for the two of us. We both have various pre conditions.
