If you book the Mecure Welcome, I recommend that you stipulate a room away from the very noisy lift. We once had a room that backed onto the lift. The noise lasted until after 2 AM and then started up again around 5.30  AM. The location is very good.

 

I would treat booking hotels in both cities the same.

Try the Savoy hotel on Little Collins street. It's across the street from Southern Cross station where the airport bus drops you, and just a minute's walk from the 109 tram stop to the pier. Plenty of free tram routes close by to take you around the city.
