petuniaflower Posted March 18, 2019 #1 Share Posted March 18, 2019 Are there close/nice/safe beaches by port in Ajaccio?
Rare Hlitner Posted March 18, 2019 #2 Share Posted March 18, 2019 There is a beach right in town (towards your left as you exit the pier). By European standards it is an OK beach, but by US Standards it is nothing to shout about. I believe it is called Plage Saint-Francois. For a better beach you will need to go about 3 miles from town to Marinella Beach which is quite nice. It is possible to get there by local bus (#2 or #5) or taxi. While Saint-Francois is very convenient (walking distance) Marinella is certainly superior in just about every way. Hank

Hank If we choose the close one, is there a town to explore by foot as well/cafes etc?

Sure, there is really a small city. It has been a few years since our last visit and Ajaccio would not be on our list of favorite cities since there is not a lot there to interest most tourists. You can certainly pull up some recent info on the Internet when it comes to the few local sites and decent restaurants. We spent our first visit walking through much of the city, reading menus, having lunch (don't remember where) and going to the beach. On a subsequent visit we took one of our very rare cruise line excursions (we probably average 1 tour for every 100 ports) to the "Calanches." That tour involved a lot of time on the bus to get to an and from the famous area and we did enjoy the ride since we saw some picturesque parts of the island. If we ever return for another long port day we would likely consider renting a car and trying to discover some of the smaller villages in the nearby region.
