luvcdays Posted June 4, 2019 #1 Share Posted June 4, 2019 Hello, Has anyone visited Cartagena, Spain on a Monday?? Websites say museums and tourist sites are closed on Mondays, but tour operators say they open all sites if a cruise ship is in port. We are wondering if we can get in the sites without a tour guide. I'm hoping someone has visited on a Monday that can verify this !? Thank you very much.

Did you find out if anything will be open because we were also hoping to see Cartagena on our own. Cheers, Susan

fernweh_S2 Posted July 31, 2019 #4 Share Posted July 31, 2019 Thank you Janis for your reply. I already am on the Roll Call. Sorry one more question - Do you know if things are open all day or just until 2pm as we have booked a shore excursion in the morning. Thanks, Susan Salzmann

Thanks, Susan Salzmann Shops and attractions in Cartagena do generally stay open on Mondays when there is a ship in port but most shut at 1.30-2 p.m. and don't reopen after siesta unless they know your ship is staying in port until late evening in which case some shops will reopen at 5 p.m.; not worth them reopening at 5 p.m. if everyone has to be back on board soon after. Oops - I meant that attractions don't usually reopen after siesta not shops who work as normal on a Monday and will reopen until 10 p.m.

Hello, Thank you so much for answering. I had a feeling that was the case. So I will have to choose between going on the shore excursion to Murcia and seeing the Monastery of the Virgin and the Murcia Casino or staying in Cartagena. It looks like there is plenty to do in port and I would especially like to see the Roman Theater and Concepcion Castle. hmmm Anyone already been to either place that can offer their opinions? I know both places well. Cartagena is a great place to visit BUT Murcia is a stunning place (like a living museum) and I wouldn't cancel your chance to go there. If you have a walk round Cartagena when you return from your trip you will come to a pair of escalators (probably marked on tourist info maps) that lead to an observation area above the Roman Theatre where you can view it even when the museum part is closed.
