By the time you get your luggage and get to the port, the Carnival reps will be processing passengers to board so you should have a steady flow from airport to cruiseport, to line, to ship. I'm sure it will take some time in the line, but you won't be standing around a couple hours waiting for something to happen.

 

As for the ruins, where are you going?

if i were you, i would try to get a flight to get you in the day before or anytime earlier. If you got delayed or a cancelled flight with no vacation insurance.... ouch

Chacchoben ruins in Costa Maya with David and Ivan - hands down. Absolutely the highlight of our trip last week. There's little more I can say that hasn't already been said here and on the Costa Maya board.
