Public transportation - Stockholm and Amsterdam

Recommended Posts

Leaving on Aug 16th from Stockholm on the Dawn and returning to Amsterdam.

We are staying one night on each end of the trip.

In looking online it seems reasonable to buy a 24 hour public transportation ticket for each city.  That will get us between the airport and the hotel as well as touring the city.

Anyone have any experience or advice for this plan?

In Amsterdam you have a few choices for transportation tickets.

If you want to have transportation to the airport take this one: https://www.iamsterdam.com/en/plan-your-trip/getting-around/public-transport/amsterdam-region-travel-ticket

If you want transportation just for the city: https://webshop.gvb.nl/en_gb/daycard/

If you opt for the GVB ticket, you need to buy the ticket to/from the airport separate.

Depending where you are staying you can take either train or bus to the airport.

Public transportation in Stockholm (SL is what the system is called) is ridiculously expensive. A single ticket is valid for 75 minutes, costs 38 SEK, and can be purchased at SL's ticket machines, through their app, or directly at the turnstiles using a credit card. It's also possible to buy 24 hours, 72 hours. If you’re planning on visiting a lot of spread-out sites, then you may want to consider a 24 pass. Passes are good for buses, underground trains (tunnelbanna or T-bana), commuter trains, trams, and certain ferry lines in Greater Stockholm.

You have to start the final leg of your journey within these 75 minutes. For example you can go from Bålsta to Nynäshamn one single ticket (39 SEK) because the change at Stockholm City.

The public transport in Stockholm is very extensive and and thus IMO 39 SEK for a single ticket with which you you travel for almost 2 hours is quite cheap.
