Shore Excursion Tips

I will be on a British Isles cruise in August.  I have a variety of shore excursions planned and would like some guidance on tipping.

 

Assuming that the guide is wonderful, we have scheduled:

 

Private Tour Half Day  (4 of us) - $80 pp

2 Private Tours Full Day (4) - $100 pp and $205 pp

Small Group  Full Day -mini- bus (up to 19) - $84 pp

Ship Tour - Full day (bus) - $79 pp

The British Isles doesn't really have a tipping culture, its neither expected or needed.

 

But I know the Americans will still want to tip, so a fiver (£5) for each trip would be what I would say.

For me it would depend on how "wonderful" the guide was.

 

10% of the tour cost for the group would be the absolute maximum, all the way down to no tip at all if the guide was less than great.

That's absolutely the starting point.

Tip zilch if the guide's not up-to-scratch.

 

Brits would probably tip a good guide a total of about £10 for a half-day, £20 for a full day.

So for  a tour with just four people that's £5 per couple half-day, and £10 per couple full day

Minibus £1 to £1.50 each depending on numbers, ship's bus tour £1 each or per couple.

But, to emphasise, it's entirely up to you, there's no automatic expectation - you tip whatever you feel its worth.

And if a guide in the UK reminded me of an expectation, the tip money would stay in my pocket 😝

 

BTW one of those full day tours is double the price of the other - that'll be down to entrance fees etc, and shows how a percentage tip doesn't work - £10 pp for one guide & £20 pp for the other???????????
