Mount Olympus; how to get there from a port?

My mother and I are considering a Greek islands cruise (most likely on Royal or Celebrity) and my mother (87 yrs young) wants to visit Mt Olympus.  I am having difficulty figuring out if this is feasible and if so, does anyone have any recommendations for doing this?

It's a 5 hour drive from Athens or about 2.5 hours from Thessaloniki.  The best thing would be to spend a few days in Greece before or after the cruise and take a private excursion there. If you turn it into a 2-3 day trip, you could also go to Meteora.  Check prices with a tour operator such as George's Taxi.
