Onboard Credit Gift Possible After Cruise Starts?

Was wanting to surprise someone currently cruising (Equinox 1/8 through 1/18) with a 'bon voyage' gift of shipboard credit. I do not have the reservation number (necessary for online purchase), only the cabin number so I sent email to Celebrity and was told to call. I called and the person who answered said this was not possible, that 'changes to booking' - his exact words, were not possible after cruise starts. Whoever I talked to had a very heavy accent and I wasn't sure they were understanding me correctly so I wanted to ask, does anyone know if it's possible to call mid-cruise and add credit to someone's shipboard account? Thank you in advance!

You were advised correctly.  During the sailing, the accounting transfers to on-board, and shore side can't access any of it.  This continues until a few days after to conclusion of the sailing, when the ship closes out the sailing, and the records go back to shore-side.

There is no reasonable way for a party not on the ship to add OBC to a passenger's account mid sailing.
