Restroom in ports & tours

Question for cruisers who 'gotta go' --

My husband needs to find bathrooms frequently (even if we cut liquids hours before). In general, how available are public restrooms on tours and in port/cities in Britain and Scandinavia? Any advice on finding restrooms?

Thanks for sharing your input on output.

Public conveniences are becoming increasingly rare. However, all cafes and restaurants will have toilets, although it is courteous to buy something if you use them.

this is a problem for me, too, and often they are down or up stairs in a restaurant.  I've taken to wearing Depends several times.  You would be better off with a smaller group excursion where they can sometimes help more than a big bus tour, as European buses do not have restrooms.  in Hamburg once they made me pay to use a public restroom, down many stairs, and i did not have any euros.  She finally took $1 from me, and let me sneak in.  One place a group of women ended up breaking the door to a toilet place because no one had the required money to go thru the turnstile/door.

Something as necessary and universal can be made so complicated, and profitable (but i do appreciate clean restrooms). Thanks for the tip - I'll be sure to have some euros for the deposit.

I've learned, over the years, that I need local currency (and enough knowledge of the language to ask for a restroom location) even on Caribbean cruises sometimes, as well as overseas.

And I just read several posts, elsewhere, about the number of squat toilets people found on their overseas travels, when they were expecting sit-down types.

Sometimes I remind myself how grateful I am for my reliable indoor plumbing at home.
