La Bombonera

Thanks! So far I had only run into El Jibarito as having them and I was wondering if there were other restaurants that served them or if it was just a seasonal thing.

None of the menus I had looked at for other restaurants had them listed.

Thanks again!

Pasteles are a sensational thing. Once upon a time a whole way of life. Times have change, there is a new modern society that find it easier to go to Burger King.

It takes time to make pasteles, people only have time for video games now. Are you getting my drift.

Pasteles made out of green bananas. Remove the skin, grate the banana whick is a starchy vegetable when green.

Before I continue I am not a cook but hope you get the idea.

The banana mixture might look like a heavy pancake mixture.. This mixture is season and is set aside. Meanwhile

you cook pieces of pork with other ingredients in a creole sauce.

Now you get a type of banana leave and pour the mixture on the leave like when you pour pancake mixture in a pan. You then pour the meat sauce over the mixture. Now you fold the the banana leave in half like an omelet. You know like gift wrapping. Ooops I forgot there is also a type of very thin paper that is also wrap along with the banana leave, any way you tight it and its ready....well after boiling in water for an hour.

Goes well with rice and beans... pasteles with salad.pasteles with potato salad or just eat alone.

Some people make pasteles with pork, chicken or no meat for you veggie people out there .hahahahahaha

Some people add ketchup on top when eating but most do not.

Some people might add some hot sauce.

Conclusion...i love it. I dont wait for a special Christmas day to eat them .

In fact if you invite me, I`ll see you there...hahahahahaha

Take care my friend and hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

Countryside: Too bad. We made 100 of them last Christmas here in

NYC. Would have invited you for some. All gone now.

Sticklec: You can usually find them at places where the locals eat.

Try asking one of the Police Officers in OSJ. They all eat at Local

Restaurants and give good information. Also, Cafe De Puerto Rico probably has them. If you are on the Condado, Ashford Ave., Cafe Del Angel has them. Very Good.

If you are in OSJ on a Sunday afternoon/evening, they have festivals

in the Princesa area (near the piers). Lots of food and I think I saw them at one of the stands there.

The best ones are made with the Plantain leaves (Ohas de Platano)

but sometimes they are hard to get so the paper works out good.
