men's suit question

My husband and I will be on the QM2's Independence Day Sampler this July and I had a question about his attire.

One of the evenings is listed as Red, White and Blue Ball (Informal) and I wondered if he could get away with wearing a tan summer weight suit for the evening with a yellow and blue repp tie.

I have cruised on QM2 before and know how formal they are, but since I've only had to worry about dressing myself I wasn't sure how men's clothes measured up.

Thanks for your help.

maybe you could find a tie that had a little red in it also..tan and navy go well, so maybe a navy tie with some red in it and even a little off white or pale yellow

I double checked and discovered it will be a semi-formal night and not informal. So now this really makes me wonder if he can wear a tan summer suit in the evening.

Please, please can I get some insight into what semi-formal men's wear is?

We will also be on this sailing and although my husband has the tux bit, we are going other places before and after and I refuse to drag along any extra stuff. He will wear a dark suit for all events. Luckily he has a red, white and blue tie that will have to do double duty. I really would not worry,I'm sure he will be fine and we will all have a wonderful time. Maybe you can find a Fourth of July tie which for once will be okay!

If you Google the term, there are many responses, like this one:

Personally, considering the ship and the stated dress code, I think a dark suit is a much better choice.
