annfi Posted June 21, 2006 #1 Share Posted June 21, 2006 Boy the easy and fun part was booking the cruise in August from Boston to Montreal but now we are floundering as to what to do after the cruise. We have about 5 nights but then unfortunately we have to get back down to the Manchester aiport area to hook up with our daughter before we fly back to west coast. Ideally we wanted to rent a car in Montreal, tour surrounding area and then drive on down to Manchester. Looking like one way car rental is outrageous. I guess most of you probably just fly in and out on an open jaw air ticket? Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.
cruisequeen10 Posted June 21, 2006 #2 Share Posted June 21, 2006 Look into the train, VIA Rail. They have some long and short hauls. Niagara Falls is quite nice if you have the time.
grannynurse Posted June 21, 2006 #3 Share Posted June 21, 2006 I agree that Niagara Falls is great but it's not that close to Montreal. We drove it in reverse last summer from Buffalo NY to Montreal and it's quite a haul. The 1000 island area is very pretty and easily accessible from Montreal. I think the train from Montreal is the best idea. The country is beautiful. We also flew home from Manchester last summer. We sailed from Montreal to Boston, overnighted in Boston with cruise friends, then drove to NH for 3 days. We stayed in North Conway, did Mt. Washington, then drove down to Manchester. My DH is still talking about it. We picked the itinerary in reverse just because of the 1-way rental fees from Canada. GN

It's hard enough doing it in drive, but in reverse?! :D
garydm Posted June 21, 2006 #5 Share Posted June 21, 2006 We had the same issue when we did NYC to Montreal last September. We spent 3 extra nights in Montreal and had a very nice time. Rented a car for one day and drove north into the mountains and it was beautiful. Did not want the hassle of border crossing delays and outrageous drop off fees so we flew back to California from Montreal. Gary
