seamac29 Posted June 22, 2006 #1 Share Posted June 22, 2006 We will be in one of the four forward penthouse suites on 9th deck of the Star shortly. One question comes to mind. While ship is in motion is it ok to enter the balcony or is it too windy or actually prohibited. Any other suggestions on what to expect would be appreciated. Will check back later in a few hours as lunch is over so back to work...:)

You can go out on the balcony at any time. However, there will be times (especially off of Vancouver Island) where, depending on the weather, you'll get some rain and certainly significant wind (the ship is already going around 25-30 mph, so you have to add that onto whatever headwinds you will have). There is a wood inner door and a Navy-like metal door with one of those metal "steering wheels" to secure it (I don't know what those doors are called; forgive the bad explanation). If that door is not secured the wind noise will drive you nuts, so make sure that you do secure it. I found that when going into port (especially Juneau) and in Glacier Bay, it is a wonderful vantage point. At other times, particularly at night, once again the winds will make the chairs bounce around. Other than that, enjoy it.:) Jerry

They did not prohibit us from going on the balcony while sailing. The people in the cabin next to us where on their balcony every night, we always managed to be there at the same time. We made sure when we were coming into port and leaving port, we were on the balcony. That was one of the highlights of the trip for us. There is a double door, in the cabin is wood door, on the outside is the 'iron' door that is closed when weather is bad. We never had bad weather. Just make sure it is pushed hard against the wall(there is a latch) as it will bang if not latched properly. The bridge ask that you keep the drapes drawn as the cabin lights(when on) interfers with their view ahead at night. We very much enjoyed our penthouse. cruisingfromMN Posted June 22, 2006 #4 Share Posted June 22, 2006 Our friends complained that the wind rattled the ceiling a lot. And while, they enjoyed the room that part of it was noisy. We visited them and we personally did not enjoy the amount of wind while at sea and the fact that you could not have your door partially open at night like you can with a sliding door. seamac29 Posted June 22, 2006 Author #5 Share Posted June 22, 2006 Thanks a lot for the tips . I will definitely pay attention to the outer door. We can usually sleep thru anything . I can see where coming into ports must be terrific.
