Meagansbaydreamer Posted September 9, 2006 #1 Share Posted September 9, 2006 I keep reading that it is illegal to sell and that you might be getting plastic - any experience?
Meagansbaydreamer Posted September 9, 2006 Author #2 Share Posted September 9, 2006 just found this... When you shop in Cozumel, be sure you don't buy anything made with black coral. Not only is it overpriced -- it's also an endangered species, and you may be barred from bringing it to the United States and other countries. LHP Posted September 9, 2006 #3 Share Posted September 9, 2006 There is an artist (and I just can't remember his name) in the Grand Caymans that used Black Coral and it is allowed into the US. It is expensive, but at least you know you are getting the real thing (and it won't be taken from you). I think he also has a showroom (studio) in Key West. cozgal Posted September 10, 2006 #5 Share Posted September 10, 2006 In Cozumel, You can find genuine Black Coral jewelry and carvings at Roberto's, Av 5 and Salas, directly below Prima restaurant. He does close for a few hours in the early afternoon. Some street vendors are selling "faux" Black coral so beware, you will get what you pay for.
