time for lunch in Venice

Recommended Posts

Our flight arrives at 9:30 AM at Marco Polo. Our ship leaves from Stazione Marittima at 4:00 PM. Is it possible to have lunch in Venice in between. We do not have a ship transfer, so we will have to take a land taxi to the terminal, right? Of course luggage is a big problem. Could we drop off our luggage at the ship then get to Venice for an hour or so? Any other ideas?

You should be able to get a land taxi to your ship which should cost around 30 euros and take about 30 minutes. Once at the port which after getting off the plane, picking up luggage, finding a taxi and driving there you probably will arrive around 11 AM or so. I would suspect your ship will be allowing boarding by then so depending on the lines you ideally will be onboard around noon or so. You will need to be back at your ship by 3 PM if you are sailing at 4 PM. You could cut it a little closer but no later than 3:30 PM. So if everything goes correctly you may have 3 hours in Venice which really isn't enough time to really enjoy the city. But you probably would have time to walk over to the Piazza Roma and catch waterbus 1 or 82 which go down the Grand Canal to St Marks. Once there you can view the exteriors of the bascilica and the Doge's Palace and maybe have time to walk from there to the Rialto Bridge. Sitting down for lunch in Venice is a restaurant is a 2 hour experience so I would suggest just picking up a sandwich or slice of pizza during your walk to the Rialto. Once at the Rialto you can catch the water bus again going the other way back to the railroad station and the Piazza Roma and the walk back to the ship.

If you managed to pull all this off you will have been walking fast but at least will have seen a little of this wonderful city. You should then go to the top deck of your ship and go to the port side with your camera(s) so you can take pictures of the city as the ship sails away.

If all you want to do is try to eat something and not see St Marks then get off at the Rialto Bridge on the first trip down the Grand Canal. You will find all kinds of restaurants there. Many that overlook the canal and then after eating catch the waterbus back as mentioned above.

My suggestion IMHO would be the next time you fly into Venice is to do so at least a couple of days ahead of time so you can actually enjoy some time in this fantastic city. Here is a link that you can check out info on Venice.

Guess it's too late to arrive a day early? You really should take more time to see Venice.
