I think if you see Akureyri and Reykjavik it will be fine. Most importantly it it is not the towns of Akureyri and Reykjavik that are the most exciting. Touring the surrounding area is wonderful. The volcanic activity, geysers, hot springs, waterfalls, landscape and the sky are the most impressive.

How much time to you have?

For a one day stop over I would recommend the Golden Circle from Reykjavik to see waterfalls, geysers, Thingvellir and some more highlights of Icelands nature and history.

As a second day add Reykjavik itself.

Four days allow to see the north and the south of Iceland: Two days as above, one day in Akureyri and close surrondings and one day some further away nature around lake Myvatn.

If you have plenty of time there are interesting and comprehensive two weeks tours offered by tour operators as well as described in guide books for self drivers.
