$2 bus on St Thomas

Have seen this bus discussed on other boards, but am wondering if anyone has taken it recently? My DW and I are booked on a day sail (interline on St Thomas), and the Captain advised us to take the taxi from our dock area to Red Hook when coming for the tour, but that he would put us on the local bus (for $2 each) for the return to town (we plan to do some quick shopping before going back to the ship). Since he is going to make certain we get ON the right bus, we just have concerns about where to get OFF the bus. According to the Captain, the bus makes many stops, and it will be easy for us to hop off "in town", but the DW just wants to be sure that's the case.

We grabbed the $2 bus back from Red Hook the last time we were in St. Thomas. The bus dropped us off a couple of blocks from the pier, quite near the aerial tram. Just talk to the bus driver and they will let you know their route. (It was great to save $8 pp!)

We are just back from the Carnival Freedom and did somewhat the same trip. We declined the taxi at the cruise ship pier 10pp and went to the local street. We then caught a private taxi 6pp to Red Hook, then caught the ferry to St John. We then caught a taxi to Trunk Bay, these fares are somewhat set but if you move away from the pier, you may be able to get a taxi a little cheaper, we bartered with them in regards to the kids we had with us. We just asked if we could get a 2 for 1 deal on the kids, or "kids ride free, right?" The worst they can say is NO. On the way back, after talking to some locals, we caught a ferry directly back to town (can't remember the name of the pier, just ask at the ticket counter). This ferry costed a little bit more, like 2 or 3 dollars for three of us. We then caught what the locals call the "dollar trolley". Anyone on the bus will tell you when to push the button to get off where you want. Just a warning, the "real" taxi drivers do not appreciate cruise ship ppl taking local transportation. We had one taxi driver on St Thomas get down right rude with us and use the F word in front on the two 11 yr old girls we had with us. He denied the existence of the dollar trolley. We absolutely loved St John and Trunk Bay.
