NCL Jewel - Penthouse AC Balcony 'privacy?'

From the pictures I can dig up it looks like when you sit on the balcony of one of the penthouses the crew and God knows who else is sitting there right above you watching every move. That seems like it would be very uncomfortable ... especially if you want to sun au natural...

We loved this stateroom...the balcony is huge. However the one drawback is the lack of privacy. Yes, the folks on the bridge and those with front facing cabins on Deck 10, can see you unless you position yourself all the way towards the back (closest to the room). Additionally, if the side walls are the same as they were on the Dawn, your neighbor, while viewing the sea, could inadvertently turn around and see you, au natural or not.

Again, if the set up is the same as the Dawn, the crew's outside lounge will be down in front of you...I actually felt bad for them. They get NO privacy when they're out there trying to relax. A short aside: my neighbor (from 9000) and I were waving to passengers on a passing ship while we were in port. One of the Dawn crew members, taking in some rays, waved backed to us! We laughed and said "please relax...you work very had and need your break, we're waving at those folks on the other ship!"

Enjoy the cabin...it is wonderful!

** Thanks for the feedback. I am really looking forward (no pun intended) to having a penthouse. We love the regular balcony's because they do afford you some "expectation" of privacy with the walls between the balcony's. However, being directly underneath the cockpit is a bit unusual.

DrWally,

We just got off the Jewel (11/05) and were in 10002. This isn't a good one for "privacy" on the balcony. However, it is a beautiful suite. If you can, move one or two left. The two center ones are very much larger and has a bit of a "roof" under the bridge. Honestly, the bridge staff don't really spend alot of time right up to the glass and probably wouldn't give a flip if you went "au natural." Just watch out for your fellow cruisemates peering around the corner (which could happen on any balcony).

Fantastic cruise, NCL crew is the best!

Rumncoke<--- is basking in the afterglow.

This is great news !! Do you happen to have any pictures of the room and/or balcony you can post or email me ?? !! Can you tell us about your Butler and Concierge experience, dining suggestions (in room vs restuarants)? You are a Gold Mine of information for us...

Whoops sorry Rumncoke. Just read your review now.

But I believe you were in 10500 and not 10002 so you were in the middle with the bigger cabin and smaller patio. Good decision :-) ... wish I wasn't too late to grab that one for our trip.

Going to go read about the Tractor man a bit ..should be interesting!

I hope we get an "interesting" character or two near us. Not annoying... just interesting!

Don't know when you are cruising but the crew will NOT be on the bridge when you are in port!

Your balcony will be private if you do not have "nosy" neighbors;)

Usually not a problem when in port:)

Butler depends on your cruise...but any meal on your balcony is lovely.

Time your dinner for sailaway from a port.

Especially at sunset:)

You will have a phone to carry with you for butler/concierge..etc.,just remember to carry the phone (and their extension numbers) with you.

You never know when you will want to dial (concierge)for a reservation or (your butler) for hors d'oeuvre on your balcony for sailaway or before dinner;)

If you forget to bring your phone, you can pick up any phone on the ship and dial your butler/concierge:)

Rumncoke - Thanks for the cabin info and links to the pictures. We will be staying in 10502 next June in the Mediterranean. What a pleasure to see a picture of "our" balcony months before we set sail! :)

Question: Since we are in an AC Penthouse, can we make dinner reservations with the concierge on a day by day basis, or is it still better to make all reservations upon embarking?

You can make ressies on a day by day basis. Your concierge will "try" to get the time you request on that day. He/she will get the ressie for the restaurant that you request...the time may be a little off.

We try to fill out the ressie form (it will be in your suite) for the whole week when we board but somtimes that is not possible if we are not sure what we will be doing at port.

You can also give him the form and make changes as they happen.

They will accommodate as best they can:)

You will love the AC!

Sorry, been away from the boards with crazy work.

We were in 10500 last year, this year we had 10002. We have good pix of the suite, need to get them onto our Webshots. Still trying to get caught up.

Thanks, Cosmo, for filling in.

Thanks Cosmo. We prefer to keep it flexible if we can (isn't that what freestyle is all about?). We don't have a problem being somewhat flexible on the exact time, unless particular entertainment figures in.

I may as well ask one other question. I assume the currency on board, for the casino, is USD? Do you happen to know if the casino will cash traveller's checks (as opposed to using the main desk)? I hate using travellers checks but it's better than brining a bunch of cash, for gambling purposes. ;)

The reason I ask about currency on board is because we will be in the Mediterranean. Sorry if that question sounded funny!

Not funny but the answer is USDs - you can cash travellers checks in the casino but the best way to get cash is to charge chips to you onboard account - no fee - up to $2000 a day - posted as a normal purchase not a cash advance - and you get points (4%) on your NCL credit card when you settle.

WOW! Thanks for that info. That really is the best way, I never would have guessed.

I am a newbie here, but this web site is fantastic!
