dreamerdick Posted November 21, 2006 #1 Share Posted November 21, 2006 Are there any really good pastry chefs on cruise ships anymore that can do real Danish and French pastries and not the frozen stuff from Nobel Sysco? What are your experiences?
Blazerboy Posted November 21, 2006 #2 Share Posted November 21, 2006 High end lines (Crystal, Cunard grills) and smaller ships like Silverseas have wonderful stuff, but even on mass or premium market lines like Celebrity, some baked goods are wonderful. The Spa cafe on M class ships had really great brown breads for the salmon in the morning, and great bread sticks in the martini bar. I'm not much of a sweet pastry person, but others found it to their liking. One thing about all cruise lines that I've discovered is that, mainstream, premium, or luxury, the pastry is often made to European standards, that is, tends to be less sweet, and have less shortening/butter in it, which can seem a little flat to US tastes. A very different flavor than what we often find here. Also, everyone raves about the pastries in Celebrity's Cova Cafe. Here's hoping you find the sticky buns to your liking!;) Andrew

I knew that we liked out Champagne drier on this side of the pond, I hadn't realised that it went as far as cream cakes. It does make a lot of sense though - I think you get decent pastries on most boats:)
