Thinkg about trying DCL, but still unsure...

Hi all,

We live in Southern California, and I am a huge Disney fan (I use to work in the parades at D-land when I was in college). My DH not so much. We have annual passes and visit about 7x a year, but he doesn't really love the parades, shows, etc. as much as I do.

I was thinking about booking the West Coast 2008 cruise to Mexico to try DCL w/out having to pay to fly, etc. but was concerned about a few things. My DH and I are in our early 30's, our son is 11. My son LOVED Princess and I think he would like the kid's program onboard DCL too. Here are my two main concerns:

1. I'm worried my DH may be bored on DCL. We usually love to gamble onboard, but there is no casino. We are not really drinkers, so don't do the bar/drinking thing very much. We enjoy a good meal or adult show, and really like doing the daily activities (ping pong tournaments for DH, spa for me, trivia competitions, etc.) though.

2. I'm worried the cost is not worth it, as it is much more than the other lines.

Any information/advice would help....

Kristi

Kristi,

The only cruise we have ever been on was a 4 night Wonder. We had a great time, but we are looking at either Princess or RCI for our next cruise. It's all about the money this time around. We can get a 7 night on Princess or RCI for a few thousand dollars less than a 7 night DCL cruise. We can even get a 14 night Caribbean Eastern/Western for about $1000 more than the 7 night DCL and in a larger sized stateroom. But if you love Disney, give it a try. You can always do another line on your next cruise if you didn't think it was worth the money.

Hi, I'm in the same boat as you - pardon the pun. We live in SoCal and are Disney freaks with the annual passports, etc. We usually go on RCI out of LA and my 11 year old has a blast. Our first Disney Cruise is at the end of March. We're paying more than twice as much for a week on the Magic as we did for a week in a suite on RCI last December. So, if you can hang on for about two months, I can let you know how my 11 year old liked it and if we'd spend all that money again.

We're booked for another Mexican Riviera run for spring break 2008 with RCI. We booked it before they announced the Disney 2008 west coast itinerary. Let's see if I come back and cancel RCI and re book with Disney! Right now we have a balcony room for $999 per person. Betcha Disney is twice that price!:D

Katstoy-

Thanks for the info. I think I'll be waiting to book for a few months anyways - my husband is wanting me to save money for a while. So, let me know when you return how your 11 y.o. liked it. We have wanted to try RCL as well, but felt it would be better to wait a few years till our son was a teen. It seems like a fun ship for all ages, but especially teens. We have stuck to Princess because it is a nice balance between kid friendly and adult friendly w/out too many of the partiers on board. We are going to try NCL this spring, but w/out our son. I just figure if we're going to do Disney we better do it soon before he becomes "too cool".

Kristi -

I've found that the hard core partiers are on thr RCI three day cruises. We've taken a 7 day and a 5 day Mexican Riviera and it was kid heavy and kid friendly. There were, however, tons of things for the adults to do. We met some folks through the meet and mingle and I lived vicariously through them - i.e. dancing the night away until after 2 am! There are lots of adult friendly things on RCI - adult comedy shows and an adult scavenger hunt. I need to wait until my DD is a bit older to participate with the late night teen program before I can venture out into that world.

But I will report back on our Disney adventure!

My only cruise so far was a 4-day Disney Wonder cruise for my honeymoon, and my husband and I loved it! There were tons of activities for families, kids, and adults - separate activities/places for each group. I'm sure your son would have a great time - Disney has done such a great job at making a niche for everyone! I'm also hoping to do one of the Mexican cruises because we live in Northern California, and Disney did such an amazing job on our last cruise. However, I'm on the fence because they are about 2x the price of other cruise lines...

However, many people say that the smallest cabin on Disney is the size of a small suite on other lines. Every room has a sofa that turns into a pull-out bed (so you get extra sitting room) and sleeps at least 3. They also have 2 half-baths: 1 with a toilet and sink and the other with a shower and sink. Disney also has 3 restaurants that you rotate through (staying with your same table-mates and wait staff) instead of a giant dining room like other lines.

I'm still not sure if all of these perks justify the extra price... I'd love to do it; just hoping I'll be able to afford it! :)

My DH is not too thrilled with the idea of a week of Disney. MY son and I tried to argue why he would enjoy it, but he isn't too convinced. I have just always wanted to try the line and thought it was a nice idea since it was going to be on the West Coast. He would rather try DCL for a short 3 or 4 day cruise, and do a regular 7 day with a more affordable line that has a casino. So we'll see.... Thanks for all the info. on DCL.
