How does one go about arranging to have a galley tour? I'd really love to do this but not sure how to go about it. Is it something you book ahead like an excursion? Cost?

From what I have read, assuming it is offered on your ship when you are sailing, it will be listed in the Capers - and it's free.:)

On our Nov. Valor cruise and on our Jan. Legend cruise the maitre' de stopped by the tables in the main dining rooms to inform pax about the galley tours. The tour was offered on the last sea day of the Valor and the next to last sea day of the Legend (8 day St. Maarten, St. Lucia, St. Kitts) cruise.

 

Tour is free. On our Valor cruise the galley tour was listed in the Capers on the last sea day. Met at 3 p.m. in the Lincoln dining room to begin the tour. Galley tour met at 3:45 p.m. in the Follies Lounge for the 8-day Legend cruise.

 

Nice tour to see what happens behind the scenes of the dining areas. Best yet, it is definitely free.

We just got off the Glory last Saturday and I asked our head waiter about the galley tours since I had not seen any listed for that cruise or the one last year. He informed me that they no longer do the galley tours due to the Norovirus outbreaks. We had no galley tour on the Glory or the Conquest last year. Perhaps they are on other ships but this is what I was told last week. TG23

Perhaps galley tour scheduling is up to the discretion of the management of each ship on Carnival and contingent on the health of the pax during sails?

 

We have taken part on galley tours on Dawn Princess, Caribbean Princess, Carnival Legend and Carnival Valor over the past 5 years. However have never been offered galley tours on Celebrity Millie, Century or Horizon or any of the 5 NCL ships we have sailed during the same time frame.

 

NCL & X both said galley tours were no longer offered due to chances of Norvo contamination. We have cruised both of those lines during fall, winter and spring seasons. Galley tours on both Carnival and Princess were taken during fall and winter seasons.

sailed last month on the Carnival Victory, which did have the Galley Tour. Not what i quite invisioned for a tour. the Head Matree`d gave a quick speach. said that there were the three stations hot cold and dessert areas. that was it. then there was a mass rush to the door to enter. That was the worst part. i think 80% of the people on the ship went to see the Galley. maybe they should break it into small groups and take like 20 people through, but that is my opinion.

 

But due to law they have to close down the operations also, so maybe that is why they don't like doing like that.

 

was nice though, i`m at work right now, so if i remember i`ll grab the digital camera and upload a picture or two from the Galley Tour.

Galley Tours are free, but at the end of the tour they will most likely try to sell you some of their cook books or towel books and have the captain autograph them for you.

Most of the "galley" tours I have been on are not in the true galley (cooking area). They have varied, and were outside the galley...like in an outer room (prep area) where specialists were making ice carvings, or carving fruits and veggies into shapes for the Gala Buffet.

 

I've never had anyone try to sell me anything while on the galley tour, and I've attended them on each cruise. Not saying it doesn't happen...I just haven't been there when they did this.

 

As a retired F&B director and chef - I can tell you most emphatically that I would never allow any 'pedestrian' in my kitchen cooking areas. 'Way too much chance of contamination of food. No way.:eek:
