Tracy Arm Excursion

Welll, we are going mid May to Alaska on the Golden Princess. It seems may is to early and we wont be able to make it in (keeping fingers crossed we can make it in), so what are some excursion companies that offer a boat trip? I know harv/marv do but its a 9hr trip. We will be in Juneau from 12-10p I believe... I think that might be cutting it to close. Any other options? is there one out of Skagway? We planned on just renting a car in Skagway but apparently there might be to much snow in May...Im starting to see why the tickets were cheaper :D

Your only option will be a private charter into Tracy Arm. You do not have time for the regular trips, that leave by 9am. Expect high costs, and you may want to post on your roll call and see if anyone else is interested and willing to split costs??

Yes there will be snow in the Yukon. But roads very likely clear.

I wouldn't fret much if you can't make it. Sometimes you just have to roll with the punches. You should still have a great cruise!

BTW-last year we were there in Sept. At least then that was too early as well ;) . We couldn't get to the Sawyers either.

We went in late July last year on the Sun Princess, and did not get into Tracy Arm due to fog in the early AM. Worse, our glacier flightseeing was cancelled as well. We are going back in May. Did Princess tell you they couldn't go into Tracy Arm in May? Funny that its on thier itinerary then.

There is no "early" or "late" in the season when it comes to getting up to Sawyer Glacier. South Sawyer has been in catastrophic retreat for the last few years (it has retreated more than a mile) and is calving large amounts of ice into the bay. The cruise ships have to slow down to a crawl to be able to navigate the ice. If it gets too thick, they turn around and head out. This is a common occurrance - more ships turn around than get to the glacier. The glacier will stabalize sooner or later and ships will be able to get up to the glaciers again. However, it won't be nearly as spectacular as it is now.
