Renting A Car in the Canary Islands

We are 4 adults visiting Tenerife, Las Palmas and Madeira on the Crystal Serenity in October/November. We are thinking about renting a car and driving ourselves on these islands rather than taking the ship shore excursions. Has anyone had experience renting a car and doing their own driving on any of these islands? Was it easy driving? Was it safe? Which sites did you include on your itinerary?
