Fred Olsen ships

The Braemar, found the boudicca a bit tired looking in the decor but the staff were fantastic they made the cruise. Fancy a trip on the black watch though it looks like a fun ship.

Definitely Braemar for us,

A fantastic little ship with a truly wonderful onboard ambience.

If you like Glitz and Glass? Multi-tiered theatres? Massive Casino's? Forget it. She won't be for you at all, but for intimate atmosphere and personal recognition from all the crew (including the captain!) she's still the best we've ever experienced!

We loved her.

The Boudicca has not long ago been refurbished with some beautiful materials and furniture ,I found Black Watch rather tired and uncomfortable but a better atmosphere on board than Boudicca . However its all how we each see things.Merecat:)

Hello Merecat, I read your comments comparing the Black Watch & the Boudicca with much interest. I'm hoping to sail on one or the other of them later this year; since they're [former Royal Viking] sister ships and both recently refurbished, my guess was that they would be very similar to one another.

I know the Black Watch has Scottish-theme room designs and the Boudicca has English-theme designs; are there any other major differences? Also, I'm curious about your comment that although you found the Black Watch "uncomfortable," you thought she had a better atmosphere on board. Overall, given similar itineraries (i.e., a Canaries cruise), which ship would you recommend for a Fred. Olsen first-timer? (And an American at that, though one who has lived in England for several years in the past.)

I had the pleasure of watching the Boudicca dock in Dover last spring. She certainly looked quite attractive from the outside!

Cheers,

John

Gavin, Thanks for the feedback. I'm slightly tempted to try the Black Prince, just because of her age & size--a completely different kind of ship to anything now sailing out of the U.S. (unless you count the Regal Empress, ex Olympic). But I think Black Watch or Boudicca would both be safer choices for a Fred. Olsen first-timer!

Enjoy your cruise on the Black Watch, & let us know how you like the ship. BTW, I've read (& subsequently noticed) that the funnels on the Black Watch & Boudicca are very similar to that on the QE2.

Cheers,

John

Hi John, im sure you will enjoy the Black Prince, i found it a little to small for my liking, i prefer midsize to large Ships. I cruise a lot on Cunard, mainly on "QE2", so i will notice the Funnels next time !

I will report on Black Watch on my return !

regards,

Gavin.

I haven't sailed FRED yet.. however... probably will very soon. Next year, she's adding to the fleet my favorite NCL ship-- the Crown. It's so sad to see the trend in cruising to go for the giant floating neon boxes.. but glad to see that there are still options for those of us who enjoy the smaller ships. I just wish FRED sailed out of NY!
