Is there a way for family members to contact the ship, in the event that there is an emergency at home while I'm off cruising?

Yes! It's buried in your cruise documents -

 

If you have an emergency back home, your family and friends can reach you by calling 1-888-NC-SHIPS (1-888-627-4477). Outside the US - 1-732-335-3280.

Here's the verbiage in the ticket packet:

 

NCL guests can also be contacted on one of our ships by calling 1.888.NCSHIPS (1.888.627.4477) from USA. When guests are contacted with the ship via satellite, they can be reached directly, if they are in their stateroom. If not, a message about the incoming call will be delivered to their cabin and then they can call back the shore via satellite.

They need a credit card to complete the call however

 

When calling from the United States:

Dial 1-888-NC SHIPS (627-4477), select the ship, and enter your credit card information.

 

When Calling from outside the United States:

Thanks for credit card detail. My folks are old school and do not use credit cards - I will remember to leave them one.

You can also "check in" with them when you are in port at most of the ports. If that will make them (or you) feel better.

 

I assume they do not use a computer.

for others who use email,although they assign you an email address, you have to log on and check for it. I had thought that you might be notified if you get one, but no.

I got an emergency call on Marco Polo and they paged me, and sent some people looking, when I wasn't in my room, The advantage of a small ship!
