Catalina Island fire....

Recommended Posts

Well, its a good thing that no ships are scheduled there until later next week. Catalina Island is currently on fire and burning towards Avalon.

We are gonna have a BAD fire season this year. The last couple of days, 20% Griffith Park burned, which is a lot. Over 800 acres gone. Very close to my house and office. We were up all night watching it burn.

Anyway, just thought I would post this for those heading to Catalina.

You should see the pics I took from my house of the L.A. fire. Maybe I will put them on webshots.

Anyway, I will keep all posted. Those heading to Ensenada tonight will be sailing right by Catalina and will have first hand view of what is happening.

How scary......looks way to close for comfort.........

Is that on Catalina and are YOU on Catalina??

No, these were actually taken Tuesday night of the Griffith Park fire, here in Los Angeles. This fire is almost out now. It seemed close to us in the pictures, but our house is a few miles away with nothing but city in between us. It was much closer to my office. As a matter of fact, my office is still closed. Streets around us are closed.

I don't have any pics of the Catalina fire. I am just watching the news.

They just said on the news that it is burning dangerously close to the Casino. For those of you that have been there, you know what the casino is. A historic building.

I guess my cruise is next up to visit there. I'm leaving in 4 days on the Monarch 4 nighter. It must be so scary to live or have your business on the island when something like this happens. It would be a terrible shame if the Casino burned down.

What is the population of the island and are they equipped to deal with this sort of thing or do they have to get help from the mainland?

What part of LA has the fire? I was searching on google yesterday but couldn't find anything current.

I read about these fires every year and I always think it must be so terrifying. All my best to those of you living nearby. I hope you'll all stay safe.

No, they don't have the resources to fight this kind of fire, but since they are still L.A. County, they are sending resources from L.A. over, including the water dropping planes.

The fire in L.A. is in the Los Feliz area. The fire itself is in Griffith Park which is a 4200 acre city park. Much like Stanley Park in Vancouver. Many homes were evacuated in Los Feliz but all of the homes were saved. Only one home suffered minor damage. The fire started on Tuesday and is almost completely out now. Thanks for your thoughts, though. It was a scary night that night for many friends of mine.

My heart goes out to the residents of Catalina. It's a beautiful piece of paradise. I too was scheduled to be there Wed... maybe we'll have a sea day instead. I have been to Griffith Park so many times in my youth... it hurts my heart to think of the history, not only in Catalina, but in LA too.

Los Angelans my prayers are with you as well to you Catalina.

Dona :)

Sorry, I see now where you said they are getting resources from the mainland and that the LA fires are in Griffith Park. Where is that in relation to downtown LA?

Griffith Park is Northwest of Downtown and East of Hollywood.

The night pictures of the fire are frightening. I can't even imagine.

How ironic that Cruise Critic has been showing a picture of the casino and harbor at Avalon the last couple of days. And I have been spending time watching the two bald eagle hatchlings in their nest near Two Harbors on Catalina. Catalina has a lot of unburned very dry chapparal so there is a lot of fuel there and not many resources to fight it. Here it is May and the fire season has barely begun!:(
