We're docked for a long day...7am-9pm and were thinking of the car rental in Skagway to Emeral Lake thing, but are having trouble getting on the fast ferry and from what I can tell the big ferry doesn't have that route on our day. Anyone have ideas for how to spend an economical day in/around Haines?

When are you going? The fast-cat is seldom more than half full. Have you called them direct?

Oh yes...several times. Different people give us different stories about the schedule and the fact that cruise ship booked excursions have first priority...and they can't/won't tell us if there will be extra trips that day...or even the ones on the posted schedule...

I amarriving haines also on aug 25th and noticed that there were no schedule dates for the ferry. I tentatively reserved a car at avis from skagway, but not sure if I'll be able to use it. I will call the ferry service today and see what answer I'll be getting. Driving to emerald lake would be great.

I'd skip the ferry to Skagway if someone had some Haines driving suggestions.
