What to do in the port of Kiel?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

If you like shopping and yachting stay in Kiel.

I would go to Lübeck (Marcipan and old town) and Hamburg (big city).

(Check Warnemünde threads for more information).

If you like more landscape at seaside:

Kappeln an der Schlei

and Glücksburg (Castle)

and Flensburg (at the Danish border)

= Cycling, beaching, eating, walking...

Or if you like it more like Atlantic City - but smaller: Timmendorfer Strand/Travemünde or Westerland on Sylt-Island (North Sea).

Check also this side.

Thanks HeinBloed. We are just beginning to plan for next year. We have requested some brochures and will see how it goes. We like the idea of getting to see both Lubock and Hamburg. We will be in port from 7am to 6pm. We want to use the time to see as much as we can.

You can visit both Lübeck and Hamburg. The train from Kiel to Lübeck takes 1:12, the train from Lübeck to Hamburg 0:50 and the train from Hamburg back to Kiel 1:16. The trains run hourly. So it is doable to visit both on one day.

Lübeck is a mid-sized medieval town. See see impressive Holsten gate, stroll through old town, have a meal (or at least a drink) at the historic "Schiffergesellschaft" and buy some marzipan at Niederegger. Everything in short walking distance.

Then take the train to Hamburg which is a big city. Think about a boat trip through the huge harbour, walk along the piers, walk along the Alster lake, visit the "Rickmer Rickmers" (old ship) or make a guided walking tour.

Yesterday, a new museum opened in Hamburg. It is about emigration to the USA and is thus a counterpart of the museum on Ellis Island.

The museum is connected to the HAPAG-LLOYD cruise line which operates some outstanding cruise ship, among them the Europa, which has constantly been rated the world's best cruise ship by the Berlitz guide.
