Questions about sailing Valparaiso to Buenos Aires

Questions about Insignia Valparaiso to Buenos Aires We are sailing on the Insignia Jan.10 from Valparaiso to BA. This will be our first Oceania cruise tho' we have over 400 days at sea on other lines. We are looking forward to trying something new.

Dress for day: It will be hot in Valpo and BA. How soon will it start to get cold? Do we need mainly clothes for cold weather? Will we actually need winter jacket or will layers covered with waterproof jacket, hat and gloves suffice?

Dress for dinner: The Oceania DVD and brochures show most men wearing sport coats to dinner and the women quite dressed up. Is that the real story?

Shore excursions: They are not yet available to reserve online. Is 90 days in advance the standard for Oceania? Are there any ports where it is better to do independent travel?

Embarkation: What time can you normally check in?

We would also appreciate any helpful hints or ideas from those who have done this cruise before (in either direction.)

Thanks!

This is a wonderful cruis.

As you go south with each passing day it gets cooler and cooler.

You should be prepared to layer your clothing. You are correct in that you will need clothes that are light for Buenos Aires and Valparaiso. Most other areas will be on the moderate to cooler side. But, weather is weather and sometimes you can get a warm day in one of the ports.

Yes, bring a jacket, fleece and/or sweater, gloves, hat, waterprooff pants, and walking shoes. Again, the key is to layer clothing.

I have friends who have sailed on the Oceania. I know they have no formal nights but I would recommend you post this question on the Oceania board to get more feedback then you'll get on this board.

Again, post this on the Oceania board.

For South America I would recommend going with mostly the cruise excursions. I think the tours are reasonably prices and are fine with groups tours. If you stop in Punta Arenas be sure to see the Penguins.

While we love South America do not wear expensive jewelry in port; particularly in the major cities such as Buenos Aires and Santiago. Spend a few days post cruise in Buenos Aires if time allows.

South Americ is beautiful so if you like the outdoors there is so much nature to take in.
