Which cabin?

We have never sailed on Hal before, but many times on Celebrity. We are planning a trip from NY for Washington's Birthday week. Our TA suggested an SS suite. What is the differnce between a regular room (we were considering a VA)? When amenities for suites are listed (Neptune lounge, pinnacle for breakfast) these suites don't seem to be listed. Is this considered a suite or not?

Essentially 56% more room (including the verandahs) and location.

Suite is in the name, but IMO it's not. Just the PH/SA/SB/SC with the extras. Some lines would call the SS/SY/SZ mini-suites, but they are really just "super sized" VAs - more width and more furniture. Check out the diagrams and pictures HERE.

Welcome to the HAL board. :)

Category SS are considered suites. The Neptune Lounge is for Deluxe Suites only, which are category SA, SB, and SC. These are substantially larger and more expensive than SS, SY, and SZ suites (Superior Verandah Suites). With superior verandah suites, you do get some of the "suite perks" (in-suite amenities, priority boarding/disembarkation, corsages/boutonnières on formal nights, etc....you can see the full list in the HAL magazine....but the neptune lounge is NOT one of them). The main difference though is that the SS/superior verandah suites are much larger than VA cabins. VA is basically a regular-sized cabin with a balcony. SS are suites, with more interior space, a larger bathroom, sitting room, closet/storage space, dressing room, and larger balcony. I have stayed in both and strongly recommend the upgrade to SS. If you want all the suite perks of Deluxe Verandah Suites, then you don't get all of them....but the extra space and amenities are well worth it IMO to upgrade from VA to SS.
