Inside Passage where does it start?

Exactly where does the iside passage start?
We are cruising Infinity on May 30th. It looks like the first leg of the trip will be at night and that part between Canada and Vancouver island looks really close for viewing. Will we get to see any of this? Also the first day of our itinerary says "inside passage cruising" How close will we be then? The path in their book does not look that close.
Thanks!

Hi Gypsy, Trust me we will be close all the first day. The passage is narrow in most areas. I sure hope we get sun for the sail out. I love going under the Lions Gate Bridge. That is when it HITS me WOW I AM ON A CRUISE!

No you can not count on land being close all the first day of sailing. In fact probably a good part will be open ocean. If you are going northbound- then yes most of inside of Vancouver is sailed at night. But I am always up before dawn and out on deck- last year had about 2 hours before the end of Vancouver island- also spotted a pod of orcas- only me and one other out on deck. Montlee;
Yes we signed up for the cc party no e-mail yet.

That is dissappointing to hear we will be in open sea. Is there another day when we will be in close? OUr itinerary says the first day is inside passage cruising. Very misleading.

It must have been the Martini Bar! No just kidding. I just remember alot of the cruise being Very close to land. What I remember were seeing the Mountains come stright to the water and I swore it was the first sea day. Hubby says no.

If you cruised from Vancouver along the Inside Passage bet. Vancouver Island and the mainland you did see lots of land. I did a post somewhere re Inside Passage clarified or something like that but since search isn't working again yet..???? If you are cruising from Vancouver you will usually go "outside" route one way and "inside" the other way. During the day in British Columbia's Inside Passage the land does look like it meets the water with huge pine trees, an occasional cabin dotting the landscape ..Many ships traverse the Seymour Narrows at the North End of the Georgia Strait.. it's so narrow that ships can only go through with the tide! Then into Johnstone Strait (watch for whales) and into some open water.. then as get closer to Prince Rupert back into more "inland" water.. I'm going to try to find that post again... re BC and Alaska Inside Passage.
