Alaska Railroad Tour

Has anyone been on an Alaska Railroad Tour before a cruise and if so, what did you think of it. We are looking at going back to Alaska and thinking about this instead of the landtour that we did thru the cruise line last year. Thanks

I found the Alaska Railroad between Fairbanks and Anchorage a nice way to see things. Unfortunately I also found the ride between Denali National Park and Anchorage to be long. Food was very expensive on the train, so to save a little money we pack a Subway sandwich from the Subway across the road from the HAL and Princess main lodges.

We pulled out of the train station about 12:30 PM from Denali National Park and got to Anchorage about 8:30 PM. You can drive between the two locations in about 3 hours.

 

I would suggest looking at renting a car and booking your hotels. Road between Denali, to Anchorage to Seward and /or Whittier were good.

Also you could pick up or drop off a car in Stweard and/or Whittier. We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Seward. Great motel on the harbor.

If you can plan out your trip and book early it is much cheaper than booking hotels/motels within 3 weeks or your trip.

We did the land tour a couple of weeks ago and I would echo above points entirely! We did northbound after cruise, not a good option!
