Malaria pills for India?

I have read that it is recommended to take malaria pills for a stay in India.Does anyone think it is neccesary?

I'm pretty sure it depends where you're going. I certainly did not do this for a business trip to Bombay, for example.

We were in Cochin, Goa, Mumbai, and Agra and no one said anything about needing malaria meds.

Many doctors, to be very conservative, will recommend to their patients that they take a malaria medication before going to India. Many people who just stay in the larger cities do not feel it necessary to take this medication, since all medications do have side effects.

The reason I asked the question was because the US Gov/health site says malaria is an issue below 6000 feet in elevation for all of India but, it also said there are no current outbrakes of malaria?
