Shopping in Mexico?

Just a small question about using money when shopping in Mexico?American dollars or convert to Mexican?which brings the best deals?

I would use Pesos. Generally the exchange rates work in your favor. Example. When I was in Cancun, the "unofficial" exchange rate at all the shops was 10 pesos to the dollar. $100 dollars = $1,000 Pesos. I withdrew $1,000 pesos from my account at an ATM (No ATM fees charged by the machine in Mexico) and my account was only charged $78.00 dollars. By using Pesos for a $1,000 Peso transaction I saved $22.

 

As long as there are ATM's around you shouldn't need to get pesos before you leave or exchange money at the exchange houses (they are for suckers). ATM's (and credit cards, though I don't do credit) generally have the best rates around.

Another note: Most stores will accept usd, however you will probably receive Mexican pesos in change.

If you are referring to Cozumel or that area I have always used USD and got USD in change. Never had a peso.

We've always used USD and paid in small bills. No problem!
