Halifax & St. John rental cars at the pier?

We are thinking of touring ourselves once we get to these ports. Is it possible to rent cars at the pier or should we rent ahead of time. Has anyone rented and have a recommendation as to a good company. Also, can you hire a cab to take you on a tour for a flat fee? What should not be missed in these ports?

Enterprise has a location in the train station directly behind the pier in Halifax (Hollis Street). They also have a rep in the cruise terminal directing you to the office. Very nice people. Rented a Dodge Stratus (considered full size) for $45 CAD or $36 US.You can easily book in advance on the Enterprise website.

There is Avis, Budget, and Hertz all within a short walk of the terminal in Saint John. I am not sure if they have reps at the Terminal.

Thanks for the info. Is it better to rent a car to tour. Is it easy to get around in those cities?

in Saint John most of the historic things to see are all with in walking distance of the ship. so you wouldn't need a car for those.....Reversing Falls is a 40 min walk..or you can take the city transit bus for $1.50 US, and it stops at Reversing Falls every 10 min. going back to the uptown area (where you are docked) Also from Reversing Falls you are able to walk to Martelo Tower, which is the highest point in the city, it's a Fort that was built for the War of 1812, and is a National Historic site. It gives a good overview of the "Uptown area, and the Bay of Fundy the only need for a car here would be if you wanted to go outside the city. St. Martins is a 45min drive to the East of Saint John, and St. Andrews is 1h30 to the west of Saint John.
