fishtaco Posted January 28, 2008 #2 Share Posted January 28, 2008 Wait until you get there, at port side the "petite train ride" is $20 Au "city tour in aircon coach" 1-1 1/2 hours $15 Au "Lemon Bay" $20 Au with return at your liesure mini bus,the tours are way way cheaper than P&O tour price and there is plenty to choose from, the harley trike ride will always be fully booked so that one needs to be done through P&O. one good tip! if you want to buy stuff in Noumia for island night like lays sarongs or Hawian shirts they are about half the price in the port market as the surrounding shops. Dont take Franks or buy them on board if you need them, just go to the EFPOST machine across the road, you get the best rate even with the banks overseas transition fee. fishtaco Posted January 28, 2008 #3 Share Posted January 28, 2008 All the tour operator at port take Au dollars as well as Franks, some shops will take dollars some wont depending on how they feel at the time and if they like you:D Most of the bars will only take Franks or "Visa" If you are going to The isle of pines get a few extra Franks from Noumea and go have a drink at the big resort to the right where everyone snorkels,It is very expensive though and have a minimum charge for Visa cards of 2000 Francs, again they will take Au dollars on occasions but depending on there mood whether they like the look of you or your attitude towards them???? Beats me but thats the way they are,I see one person use dollars the next couldn't on more than one occasion? Den.
goanna Posted January 28, 2008 #4 Share Posted January 28, 2008 Hire a 'noddy' car or motor bike. It's great fun and you get to see all the island which is lovely. The hire shop is about 20 paces away from the ship dock so not far to walk. REMEMBER : drive on the opposite to Australia! :) The town of Noumea is not it's best feature, nor are the prices in the shops, but it's still a lot cheaper than going to France and you can practice your school french. Of course, a REAL french pastry is on the top of everyone's list!
Ela 2 Posted January 28, 2008 #5 Share Posted January 28, 2008 We like the A$15 tour. It goes to the same places as the petite train, and also goes to an addtional lookout. Buy the tour in the cruise terminal at the wharf in Noumea. After the tour, walk through town and Coconut Square.:)

lelley Posted January 30, 2008 #11 Share Posted January 30, 2008 HI, we have just returned from a cruise on the "Star" yesterday. This was our 2nd cruise and both times we have been to Noumea and Isle of Pines. First trip to Noumea we did Amedee Island trip (booked thru the ship) and it was a fabulous experience. This time we booked Tabjou Culture Centre thru the ship and also booked a train trip in the market area for $39 cheaper per person that the on board prices. If we ever went again we would just do a Countryside trip from the agents in the markets, but I did notice that both Amadee and the culture centre (full tour) were only offered with P&O. If going to Isle of Pines take one of the coach tours for $15A pp as it was a good overview of the Island. If you love tropical fish definately do Amadee Island as it is a great day out:D
