Dawn Dry-Dock

Has anyone heard/read anything definite about the Dawn's dry-docking....as in where it will be, what will be done, etc.

I know the main reason is to repair the engine, but with 20 days the rumor is that a lot more is planned. I would sure like to know what since we will be on the first cruise after she returns.

I am getting so excited...I am starving for Dawn information after waiting over a year for this cruise!! :)

We were on her Sept 13-19 and our friends were on the dolphin deck and said that they had furniture pulled out away from walls in the rooms and were changing out beds and carpets. This was their first princess cruise and they thought that was not a good impression for them. Employees were sitting in the halls waiting for work. The employees said they all will be helping with a complete clean of the ship. Cleaning and replacing carpets and such. On Sept 16 after disembarkation, they were doing a sanitizing of the ship. Guys in "space suit and masks". We had a hard time getting off the ship after everyone else had left, cause bulkheads were closed and yellow tape was around diff. areas. Finally got off for awhile.

Here it is

AVW Controls Ltd - Press Release - Sept 2004Sun Princess - Revisited

When Sun Princess was designed and built by Italian shipbuilders Fincantieri in 1995, for Princess Cruises, it was the first of the Sun class cruise ships. The stage automation in the Princess Theater on board Sun Princess was originally designed by Anton Woodward for Glantre Engineering and has been in daily use ever since.

Nine years on, the time has come for an upgrade to the stage automation systems and Princess Cruises based in Los Angeles have tasked Anton, now owner and Managing Director of stage automation specialist AVW Controls Ltd to carry out the upgrade on Sun Princess and again on its sister ship, Dawn Princess.

AVW are therefore upgrading the Sun Princess to its award winning Impressario motion control system. This upgrade will happen whilst in dry dock in San Francisco, and later its sister ship Dawn Princess will have the same upgrade at the end of November in Freeport, Bahamas.

The upgrade involves the replacement of the main computer control systems from the original DOS based system, which was beginning to show its age, to the Impressario system which currently operates within Windows XP. This will enable the ships crew to learn the system much quicker as the crews generally rotate every three months. The upgrade will also mean that AVW can remotely access the control system from its base in the UK whilst the Sun Princess is cruising in the Caribbean or its Alaskan tours thus making remote diagnostics a reality.

The stage automation systems on both vessels will then be future proofed for the foreseeable future.

There are 4 engines and one is not working properly - so this will be fixed (or replaced) during dry dock.

I have no doubt they will take the opportunity to replace carpet and drapes in public places that they are unable to replace when passengers are onboard.
