First time in St. Kitts...what to do

Hello everyone,

 

I will be in St. Kitts this coming January, and I was wondering what is a must do for first timers. This will be my Honeymoon cruise, we are in our mid to late 20's and like adventure as well as beach. We love to get to know the places we visit, please help us with ideas!

My wife and I did "The Tour" with Mr. Thenford Grey, which we arranged through the internet for our cruise on the Crown Princess in early April '08. Mr. Grey met us at the dock and escorted us to his comfortable air conditioned tour bus. He was a walking encyclopedia of knowledge: botanist, arborist, naturalist, ecologist, educator, businessman, economist and historian. He even recited the "Shakespearean" epitaph of Samuel Jefferson (a forerunner of Thomas Jefferson).

 

 

Brimstone Fortress was very interesting, and Romney Manor and the Batik factory were absolutely fascinating. Romney Manor had gorgeous gardens. Cockleshell Beach was great for us, too. Not rough at all, and tons and tons of shells. Next time we will pack our snorkel gear.

 

 

 

This was a fantastic tour! We will tour again with Mr. Grey when we next visit St. Kitts, and I would strongly recommend him to anyone who is planning to visit St. Kitts.

Brimstone Hill is a must if you like history; we also did Caribelle Batik at Romney Manor. The gardens were beautiful and the shop had a great selection (much more extensive than the CB shop on St. Lucia).

 

We did a shore excursion and I think next time would take a taxi. The driver was very knowledgeable, but we only had 45 minutes at Brimstone Hill and that was not enough.

 

I HIGHLY recommend the sugar train. If you start from the Basseterre (south) end, the first part of the tour isn't very scenic, but the majority is beautiful. We had a great guide and the service was excellent. Would do it again in a heartbeat.

 

I wish we'd had more time to explore Basseterre. There were some nice shops at the dock--I got two great dishes at Glass Island--but there was a lot of interesting architecture a few blocks farther inland that we didn't have time to see.

 

I've also heard that the Marriott beach is good...didn't go there, but someone recommended it for a beach day.

I'd echo everything that David and Julie said here . . . without a doubt . . . the tour with Thenford Grey was a highlight . . . I don't know if a tour of the island would meet your criteria for "adventure" but as David and Julie mentioned Thenford is one of a kind . . . you can't help but learn something about St. Kitts, Basseterre, Brimstone, the various flora and fauna found on the island, the history and most important of all the culture of this fantastic island . . . learning has never been more fun. Like David and Julie said . . . if ever I get the chance to return to St. Kitts I too would book another tour with Thenford in a heartbeat . . . or at the very least just look him up to say hi . . . when you leave his tour you truly feel as though you've made a friend on the island.

Can you tell me how much was the tour and how far in advance did you book? Did you need to pay in advance? There will be four of us going in Feb 2009. Pd the web address did not come across can you send it again please

We are looking at his tour for our January 09 cruise...it sounds great! I don't think you need to pay in advance, but I could be wrong....check out his website and drop him an e-mail. Can't hurt to reserve space now if you know you want to book with him. Based on the reviews here I imagine he books up quickly.

We paid $40 per person for this tour which seemed to be right in line with most every other tour that we took or that I looked into reserving. You pay the day of the tour, but should contact Thenford in advance to reserve a space . . . If you're going in Feb. 2009 that should give Thenford plenty of time to reserve a place for you . . . I think we reserved two spots four or so weeks ahead of our cruise. And as mentioned earlier . . . thenfordgrey.com.

 

Trust me . . . you really can't go wrong on this tour . . . one of the best from one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet.

When you refer to the sugar train, do you mean the St. Kitt's scenic railway? Is it the same thing? We are thinking about this,but it has gotten mixed reviews on the threads,so I'm glad to see that someone liked it. Was it uncomfortable up on top of the train looking out-I mean, was it a bumpy ride?

Go to Cockleshell\Banana Bay. Lion Beach Bar at one end and Reggae Beach Bar at the other. Nevis as a beautiful backdrop. Cannot go wrong, I GUARANTEE IT!!! Good snorkeling against the rocks left of the beach.
