Getting to Pompeii

Recommended Posts

Our upcoming cruise (Royal Clipper) will call at Sorrento from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and offers a shore excursion to Pompeii (minimum sign-up 20, maximum unlimited, E60 per). We generally prefer self-guided touring, at at least with a group smaller than a busload. Would it be feasible to get from the pier to Pompeii and back independently, by local taxi or by train? Any advice or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Our ship ported in Naples and we took the train from Naples to Pompeii, the same train went to Sorrento. The Pompeii stop is Pompeii Scavi, walk to the ruins was about 4-6 min and entrance was about 11E (train was rndtrip 3E) We got a guide at the site. If we had spent less time at Pompeii we would have continued on to Sorrento.

We are planning to go to Herculaneam by train during a port stop in Sorrento. Herculaneum is on the same train line as Pompeii, although Pompeii is closer.

The train is called Circumvesuviano. Here's a link to a Rick Steve's article with a small map showing the route (the green line): http://www.ricksteves.com/plan/destinations/italy/amalfi.htm

Also, a link to Europe port review which describes getting there from Naples, but which is still worth looking at for the Pompeii info: http://www.europeportreviews.com/Naples5.htm

I've posted on Tripadvisor to get specific info on taking the train from Sorrento but it was to go to Herculaneum and Vesuvius, so not sure the info would be of much help, other than the advice to "buy the ticket at the tobacco shop at the Marina Piccola ... the ticket allows you to take the bus to the train station from the marina."

Here's a link to TA forums where you'll find more info by scrolling through the threads, doing a search of "Pompeii" or posting a question: http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowForum-g187782-i162-Sorrento_Campania.html

go by train. Simple efficient with station no distance from site entrance. :)
