Mandatory muster

On the Carnival Pride the muster drill took about 45 minutes in the hot sun because they were looking for missing passengers who were finally found. Please don't do this to your fellow passengers. You never know when you're going to need it.

When our muster drill was called on the Sovereign, my fiance and I were in the middle of changing clothes. When we got dressed and went out into the hall, no one was to be found. The halls were completely empty. We had no clue where we were supposed to go (it was our 1st cruise) and no one came looking for us.

A lady from my dinner table didn't go, said she never does. I don't think she had to re-do it, but her husband was there so maybe that made a difference. It doesn't usually last that long, but is much more pleasant when it's done in a public room on the ship instead of out on deck.

Well I think if her husband went to the muster drill he was simply checking in for two person when their cabin# was called. So they never recognized that she wasn´t there.
In a public room it maybe more comfortable but I think it makes more sence to do it at the muster stations so everybody knows where to go in the case it really happens.

Muster is also a good way of meeting fellow passengers. Its hard not to speak & be friendly seating in a bar w/ a life jacket on.

On 3different crusie lines I've been on, all musters were carried out basically the same way. Attendance, or roll call of your cabin # and # of people in it.. and I agree. its important. and it only takes about 20 mins to complete. JUST DO IT

I've always attended the muster drills, but now that I'm becoming a more seasoned cruiser, I must admit that skipping out has crossed my mind. On NCL, they took attendance, but on Carnival no attendance was taken, so it would have been pretty easy to just hang out in the room till it was over. On NCL, the muster drill was pure agony. It was conducted outside in Houston on an extremely hot day. There was no place to sit and the whole process seemed to go on forever. On Carnival, the drills were mostly conducted in air-conditioned lounges. We did go outside, but only for a very few minutes at the end, just to see where our lifeboat was. I guess I'll go to the one on my next Royal Caribbean cruise so I can see what they do.

20 plus cruises and i still go to the drill. It's certainly not for the instructions of how to put on my life vest. i know where the stations are on the ships. i go because how RUDE abnd INCONSIDERATE would i be to hold up 2000 other people standing in the heat if i didn't. on all but 1 cruise they took roll call of cabins and one capt even came on the loudspeaker and announced " we're very sorry for the inconvenience ladies and gentlemen, but as soon as mr and mrs so and so from cabin number whatever it was reports to their lifeboat station we will all be able to begin your vacation.

there has to be a better way to insure that all passengers show up. my suggestion is, if your not accounted for at roll call, they should lock your seapass card. it will be unusable til you do your muster. just an idea

I heard "muster" was a secret timed game the staff played in which the stewards quickly rummaged through your luggage and took bets on which guest would stiff them on the tip. If it was hinted by their search that you would not tip at the end of the cruise, they went ahead and took a few of your belongings during the "muster" game. It's a secret game they enjoy and it starts their week off right. They get a big laugh later about you standing on deck sweating, wearing a bulky life vest. I have been on nine cruises,three on voyager class ships. two of the those my wife and grandchildren were asleep in the cabin and I went alone to the muster. when they called my number ,I answered and that was the end of it. so if you want to skip,just send one of your group,make sure you are noticed by the crew and stand close to the back as possible and yell your cabin number when asked.having said all that.I realized how stupid that was.a little effort might be the differance between a survivor and a victim.
