Mandatory muster

Recommended Posts

This is what the thing at the beginning is called when everyone is wearing their life vests, right? Is it really mandatory? what happens if someone was to skip out? houw long does it last, and what all is covered?

Thanks in advance

During the muster they call names and the stewards check rooms, etc. So it would be hard to skip. I have heard that if you miss it for some reason you get "invited" to try again at another time.

Please don't try to skip out. They hold everyone up while they send your steward to get you. Yes, they check bathrooms. Everyone has to wait while they look for you. If they still can't find you, they continue the muster and you get a private lesson when they find you. They close all the bars during muster so as to make sure that everyone attends.

When we did the Med cruise on the Brilliance, we were so exhausted fromt he plane trip, that we got into the room and just crashed. We slept right threw the Muster drill. I woke up when the Steward came in and he said "Dont worry about it" and shut the door. Then I went back to sleep, and never heard anything about it again.

I'm not sure what would happen if you didn't attend, but it really doesn't last that long. They just show you how to put on your life vest correctly and how and when to use the things attached to it. I think we were there all of 15 minutes once it got started.

They were checking off cabin numbers as we came down to our station on the Voyager in March. It only lasted at the most 15 mins, nothing big.

its a good idea to attend, even if it wasnt mandatory, which it is. i used to think it was a waste of time and when would you ever need to know this stuff right? but that was until i was on a cruise ship in which the engine room caught fire and we really did have to muster. now i know the importance of the muster drill.

you're life is more important than the 15 minutes it takes for the drill.

I'm always amazed when people skip this type of thing. ?*#% happens. What happens if there is a problem and you have to muster?.....obviously you wouldn't know what to do and would probaly panic.

I encourage the small minority that attempt to skip the muster, to continue to do so. It will only free up room on the lifeboats for those of us who actually value human life and don't think we're too special to attend a 'silly' drill.

I have been on 2 cruises so far and haven't attended any muster....what i would do is i would find the info on my door then as i explored the ship I would find it. And no one ever came looking for us as they could find us because we were always in our room unpacking getting ready for a great vacation. And as far as i know they didn't keep anyone cause after 10 or 15 min. anyway they say muster over.

The captian of the Titanic didn't think it was that important either. He canceled the scheduled muster drill. That night was the night they struck the ice berg. I assume you know the rest of the story?

Look, it's not that big of a deal and if something does happen you'll know where to go, what to do and what to expect. Nothing is fool proof and accidents can and will happen. It is very important that the passengers and the ships crew know what to do. That's why it's MANDATORY.

Sarabeth,

I guess that's the difference between RCI and Carnival... RCI really does want their guests to make it back for another cruise.

They DO check the roster for every person to show up on RCI ships, and the DO give special makeup lessons for those that think they're too important to come to muster. We had one guy on my last cruise who had your attitude, and he was actually removed from the ship for giving the crew (and his wife) hell. They told him to sit down, shut up, or get off the ship. He called what he though was their bluff, and stormed off cursing. Security threw him off the ship before he even set sail. Tough for him, better for the best of us.

Royal does not check, on the Explorer last July my sister and her husband fell asleep in the cabin and missed it, their cabin steward came in and said dont worry about it, and just recently on the Mariner another couple with us did not go either and their cabin was not checked nor were asked to make it up on either trip.

Miss the muster drill? Why would anyone want to miss this event.

This is when everyone all comes together at the beginning of the cruise and feels rather silly with their life preserver on, but everyone else feels just as silly! Everyone has anticipated the first day of their cruise for some time and the muster drill means that your vacation has finally begun! What's more. . . . after the drill is it time to eat!

Same here...just had friends that came off a GOS...they didn't do the muster either...were sitting on their balcony...no one came to check on them either....so I guess...all cruise lines are alike...just pick and choose....

You know how they always tell you at muster that you must not smoke or drink if there is an emergency and you have to enter the lifeboats? Believe me, if that ship is going down, I think I just might TAKE UP smoking and I'm pretty sure I'd feel better about it with a stiff drink in my hand.

This is way off topic, but on the first formal night, all the guys in my group wore tuxes. When we got to the centrum to take pictures, we noticed that they had the titanic stairwell backdrop up, so we sent one person to every room, and took two sets of pictures, one with and one without life jackets, all while dressed to the nines. The other groups were laughing too hard to mind the extra delay.

We missed muster on the Ryndam several years ago. We got a very polite note delivered to the cabin informing us that a second muster would be held and that we were one of the people that had to attend. Sure enough, later that evening, they made an announcement that the alarms were for the folks who missed the muster drill on the first night and crew. I wouldn't miss it on purpose, but if that alarm doesn't wake you, perhaps a hearing check is in order

Guest OBAYbee
Every cruise I've been on I've attended the drill. And once had to wait along with 2,000+ others until those not attending were found.
My last Cruise on Mariner of the seas had a unique situation. There were FIFTY people arriving 2 hours late due to flight and security troubles. (that was when our security level was raised again) The Captain announced that the 50 passengers would have to meet in the library at a specified time to go over the drill before going to bed that night.

I never missed the muster drill so far. Although it´s always the same I´ll always attend it as I think it´s not only a rule by the cruise line and also a law to attend but I also think about it as an important procedure that might safe life.
I feel also that it´s impolite against your fellow cruisers to let them wait for you as well as putting the ship personnel in trouble just because I´m too lazy to spend this 15 min.
Last year on my cruise on the Norwegian Dawn I went to the Muster Drill as usual and they called my cabin number at the muster station to check that I was there. A few days later I had a letter in my cabin telling me I didn´t go to the muster drill. It had detailed information baout the muster procedure as well as an "invitation" to a special muster drill for the people that haven´t attended the regular one.

My wife and I have found a way to alleviate the pain of "having" to go through this muster.....On the first cruise we went on we thought it was kind of funny the way we looked in our life vests. We took pictures of each other, and when we put together a photo album, those two pictures ended up on the cover.

It is now one of our cruise rituals that we take pictures of each other in our life vests. We actually look forward to the muster now.....Kind of strange I guess, but we enjoy it.
