helencw Posted July 25, 2008 #1 Share Posted July 25, 2008 My 7 year old and I will be on the Carnival Splendor arriving in Warnemunde on Thursday, Aug 14 (6am- 10 pm). I would like to take him to see the castle in Schwerin. From Heinbloed's wonderful postings, it seems like the Landerticket Mecklenburg- Vorpommen ticket is the most economical? We would travel after 9 am, transferring at Rostock hbf for Schwerin hbf? Are we restricted in selection of trains using this ticket in either direction? From the train station at Schwerin, is there a tram or bus to the castle, Market Square, and other sights? (My 7 year old is not enthusiastic about long walks). Many thanks! Rare HeinBloed Posted July 25, 2008 #2 Share Posted July 25, 2008 I would like to take him to see the castle in Schwerin. From Heinbloed's wonderful postings, it seems like the Landerticket Mecklenburg- Vorpommen ticket is the most economical? Absolutely! We would travel after 9 am, transferring at Rostock hbf for Schwerin hbf? But you can also use earlier train which starts after 9.00 hrs and this will you a little extra time to cover the need of your daughter who might need few minutes more... Are we restricted in selection of trains using this ticket in either direction? Yes - you are not allowed to use long-distance trains (IC). There is a selection of possible return options: From the train station at Schwerin, is there a tram or bus to the castle, Market Square, and other sights? (My 7 year old is not enthusiastic about long walks). Somehow Schwerin is so small that it would not make too much sense: Here is a route map: http://www.nahverkehr-schwerin.de/pdf/netzplan2007/liniennetz.pdf It's Hauptbahnhof to Schloßblick Tram 1 or Bus 5, 7, 19, 51, 71 for two stops... A Family Day Pass is 7.70 EUR (Familienkarte) But this would be like walking from South Ferry/Staten Island Ferry Terminal to Battery Park... nothing really to use the bus but a little too much to walk... http://home.arcor.de/yao/Schwerin.pdf It's really no long distance to walk... Have a great day in Schwerin!!! Willkommen in Deutschland!!! Welcome to Germany!!! HeinBloed
helencw Posted July 26, 2008 Author #3 Share Posted July 26, 2008 After looking at your walking guide in Schwerin and looking at this map http://www.hot-maps.de/europe/germany/mecklenburg_vorpommern/schwerin/homeen.html (I noticed Karl Marx Str. on the map is now Alexandrinen Str.) I think we will be able to walk to the castle and cathedral easily. After reading some of your advice for others, I will buy single tickets for the 8:37 Warnemunde to Rostock, and then use the Landerticket for the 9:04 from Rostock to Schwerin and for the rest of the day. This train schedule in English is easy to use: http://www.bahn.de/international/view/en/index.shtml (Regular fares for 1 adult are the same as fares for 1 adult and their child combined. Are children free?) If my 7 year old son is patient after the castle, we would go to Lubeck. (Otherwise perhaps sightseeing in Rostock or Warnemunde) HeinBloed, thank you for your kindness in helping everyone on this board! I am amazed by how much you know! For the section Warnemünde - Rostock Hbf you need to buy for your kids seperate tickets: 1.30 EUR for children / 1.70 EUR for adults. But your kids are included in Länderticket. With single tickets: children under 15 are free on same ticket with adults. Regards, HeinBloed
