karylrocks Posted October 23, 2008 #1 Share Posted October 23, 2008 I have booked the Fantasy for my daughter for her honeymoon. At Progreso they only want to visit the ruins, so it doesn't matter whether it is a long or short trip to get there. What they really want is to be able to go into and climb around in the ruins. Which is the best location for really getting to explore?
YucatanToday Posted October 24, 2008 #2 Share Posted October 24, 2008 Uxmal is considered to be even better than Chichen Itza - just not as well known, or as crowded. Autoprogreso offers an excellent tour to the ruins - it's about a 2 hour drive there. hdawson Posted October 24, 2008 #3 Share Posted October 24, 2008 As usual, YT is correct. I much prefer Uxmal over Chichen Itza.
karylrocks Posted October 24, 2008 Author #4 Share Posted October 24, 2008 I was considering Uxmal, but do they let you climb around on and inside the ruins? She had read that they used to but don't let you anymore, so I just want to verify that you still can. Anybody been there recently?
hdawson Posted October 24, 2008 #5 Share Posted October 24, 2008 Yes, you can climb some of the ruins at Uxmal. No at Chichen Itza.
texsailor Posted October 26, 2008 #6 Share Posted October 26, 2008 It has been 7 years since I have been to Chichen Itza, but when I was there you could certainly climb to the top of the big pyramid. See attached.[/ATTACH]
hdawson Posted October 26, 2008 #7 Share Posted October 26, 2008 No longer permitted at Chichen Itza. I've never seen a reason so I think possibly too many cases of injury due to vertigo.
YucatanToday Posted October 26, 2008 #8 Share Posted October 26, 2008 The main reason climbing is no longer allowed at Chichen Itza is to protect the ruins, along with safety reasons.
karylrocks Posted October 27, 2008 Author #9 Share Posted October 27, 2008 Thanks for the replies - looks like Uxmal wins. Now I just have to wait until the Progreso excursions are available to book for next year.
fargodakota Posted October 28, 2008 #10 Share Posted October 28, 2008 Here is a question about Uxmal. How is the bus ride? Is the road decent and what type bus/van is taken?
YucatanToday Posted October 29, 2008 #11 Share Posted October 29, 2008 The road between Progreso and Uxmal is an American-style highway and the bus is first-class with air-conditioning, comfortable seats, and a bathroom.
fargodakota Posted October 30, 2008 #12 Share Posted October 30, 2008 Thank you for the info. My wife watches too many movies about bad roads and over packed buses. I had seen pictures after posting the question and the road looked really nice. Much nicer than the road to our house.
YucatanToday Posted October 31, 2008 #13 Share Posted October 31, 2008 LOL - I know, chickens and bandits! The main danger when driving in Merida is being cut off in traffic by a BMW.
fargodakota Posted October 31, 2008 #14 Share Posted October 31, 2008 My wife told me if there are any chickens on the bus I am getting smacked. She was glad to hear the road was nice and the buses were as well. Can't wait to come down and see everything in person.
