what to do here

Some excursions are only offered on the ships (Water Island Bike Tour for instance), and sometimes the admission prices for cruise passengers is less than for hotel guests, so you have to compare prices before making a decision.

Island tours w/beach, beach visits, half and full day day sails, shopping, historical walking tours are popular, but there are other activities.

Is there anything in particular you were hoping to do/see?

If you are looking for a tour guide that will show you the island, beach, shopping, etc..I would try Henry Christopher with EEE Tours. Several years ago was our first time in St. Thomas as well and we wanted an excursion outside of the ship. Thank goodness I found Henry. He is a retired police officer and is now a Pastor at The Church of God in St. Thomas...He will show you a great time and show you everything that there is to know about the island. His website is www.eeetours.com Hope this helps!

We went on a private tour, there were 5 of us. We stubbled upon a man with a nice air conditioned Toyota van, he took us to all of the "tourist" areas for $20 each for 2 1/2 hours. We were so please we gave him a $20 tip. His name is Sobers McLeish 340-998-8540 :D

I 2nd this big time! DW and I booked a tour with Henry back in May 08. There were 3 Carnival ships in port that day and the port was a MADHOUSE! We found Henry after a bit of searching, and were very happy to find that he had booked only one other family who got off @ the first beach stop. We had the rest of the tourbus to ourselves, and were:D from ear to ear, glad we were not non-prebooked cruisers being sardined into the nearest bus. He took us shopping, to Emerald Bay Beach, and to MountainTop, and many other stops. We are so glad we chose him.

I'd also like to recommend Burlie at Virgin Island Scenic Tours. She offers a great variety of activities for only $25 per person -- a great value when you compare it to tours the cruise ships offer:

  1. Approx 2 hours shopping in downtown Charlotte Amalie
  2. narrated tour of the island with photo stops at scenic points
  3. a stop at a beach for approx 2-3 hours

Last time we stopped at Coki, but I think sometimes groups decide to stop at Sapphire or Emerald beach...She let us decide. She is great fun, very informative and her Safari truck is well maintained. You can "google" for her website where you'll find tour photos and more great reviews. You can also contact her via her web site or by cell phone.

The two times I was at St. Thomas, I went to Magen's Bay Beach first, followed by walking downtown Charlotte Amalie, and finishing the day off going to Paradise Point, which is simply wonderful; especially if you are there during sunset.

There's something new now - ROCK CLIMBING! They depart from Red Hook and take you by boat to some rocks between St Thomas and St John for an introductory experience with the sport. They're called usvirockclimbingdotcom and they're not offered through the ships.
