christinalvt Posted December 27, 2008 #2 Share Posted December 27, 2008 Anybody into Geocaching? I am hitting Nassau, San Juan and VI next week on the Statendam and wondering if there are any fellow geocachers who can give me some hints. Hi! I am a geocacher, but not sure whether I will go caching on my cruise in February. In case you haven't yet, look on geocaching.com for caches in the areas where you will be in port. Read the logs of previous cachers, to know what to expect. And most of all, have fun!!
zoya19 Posted January 9, 2009 #3 Share Posted January 9, 2009 We leave Sunday and plan on doing some geocaching. I have everything loaded and ready to go. ;) I printed out each cache as well to give us hints if needed.

papa_smoke Posted January 10, 2009 #6 Share Posted January 10, 2009 There are a number of Geocaches on Grand Cayman. MANY are within walking distance of the dock. I found a couple over on the east end, too. Left some great TBs for you to find!
geospyder Posted January 13, 2009 #7 Share Posted January 13, 2009 Another geocacher here. I never leave on a trip without my GPS. Here is a site to check out - http://www.tageo.com/index.htm You can use it to zero in on an area and then use the resulting coordinates as the center to build your pocket query. Not exactly intuitive but is a good start for foreign countries. Have fun.
scottbee Posted January 17, 2009 #8 Share Posted January 17, 2009 Have geocached on almost all our cruises. Great way of seeing sites you wouldn't normally see, and to get away from the normal tours. In Alaska, ran into a few other cachers from our ship that did the same thing
Lefty Writer Posted February 4, 2009 #9 Share Posted February 4, 2009 Great now I want to cache in Alaska LMAO:rolleyes: My wife and I went caching on our honeymoon cruise to Alaska this last September (2008). As you can tell by my profile, we live in SE Texas, between Houston and Galveston, right in the path of Ike. We flew out early and spent the extra day in Seattle caching, including a visit to Groundspeak HQ. We hit some caches in Juneau and Victoria, B.C. and had a blast. On our first cruise in Oct of 07, we hit some caches in Grand Cayman and Cozumel. We're going back on the same cruise this November, so I'll make sure my Maggies are loaded with new caches. Glad to see a Geocaching thread!
donnar Posted February 12, 2009 #10 Share Posted February 12, 2009 My DH and I have done some geocaching in Bermuda. There are some there that are virtual ones. The goecaching site does not allow any new ones to be formed but there is one cache in Bermuda that each time we go there we go to in and put a new treasure in it. It is about a mile walk but it is a nice walk. We love geocaching. It is a fun way to explore new places.
Lefty Writer Posted February 12, 2009 #11 Share Posted February 12, 2009 Perhaps it would be helpful if we posted our Geocaching names along with our Cruise Critic names? Mine is the same for both: Lefty Writer
St.Michael Posted February 25, 2009 #12 Share Posted February 25, 2009 ^^^^^ geocaching name the same:D. We seek caches on every vacation. Tricky on the islands without road maps loaded but still very doable.

Lefty Writer Posted March 19, 2009 #14 Share Posted March 19, 2009 What all do you need to do this? Hello there! The most important item you need to go geocaching is a GPS receiver. You DON'T need a "fancy" GPSr, with all the "bells and whistles," just a basic unit to get started. These are readily available on eBay for around $50 or so. A Houston area geocacher created this site here: http://factsfacts.com/geocacher.htm It's an excellent source for a beginner's overview of geocaching. The "main" geocaching site can be found at: www.geocaching.com A basic account is FREE, and with registration, you can then search for caches in a given area. If you have specific questions, just post here and I (or any other cacher, I'm sure) will be happy to answer them.
miniwheat Posted March 19, 2009 #15 Share Posted March 19, 2009 Me and my husband never go on vacation without Geo caching it has been the highlight of our vacations. We have so much fun planning out which ones we are going to get. It is a great family activity.:)
Elde Posted April 10, 2009 #16 Share Posted April 10, 2009 Another geocacher here. I never leave on a trip without my GPS. Here is a site to check out - http://www.tageo.com/index.htm You can use it to zero in on an area and then use the resulting coordinates as the center to build your pocket query. Not exactly intuitive but is a good start for foreign countries. Have fun. I just use the geocaching.com Google Earth plugin, zoom into the area in question, and then find a cache to use as the center for the pocket query. My Lady and I are planning our first cruise currently, but I've used this method many times while traveling stateside.
giraffist Posted April 15, 2009 #17 Share Posted April 15, 2009 My son started geocaching last summer. We've already looked up some caches on geocaching.com for the ports we will be in on cruise to Alaska in June.
JeanaR Posted April 25, 2009 #18 Share Posted April 25, 2009 I intend to geocache in Europe this summer, and hope to find a TB to bring with me from the States. As I was reading this, I was thinking that it would be cool to have a cache on the ship itself, then realized the coordinates might be a bit difficult to post.;) -Jeana, otherwise known as CrazyCache
Lefty Writer Posted April 25, 2009 #19 Share Posted April 25, 2009 Ah, cool! Caching in Europe would be awesome! There's a "Band of Brothers" series that starts out near Normandy and goes from there. At least I think the series got placed. We're definitely caching again in Cozumel and Grand Cayman this year. I doubt we'll do anything on our Jamaica stop, though. Sanbelle Posted June 11, 2009 #20 Share Posted June 11, 2009 I am fairly new to geocaching but I am going to Europe in August and plan on looking for at least 1 cache while I am here. I have been on geocaching .com and saw that there are plenty of them there. I am narrowing it down to Tallin as we will be doing a DIY walking tour. Wish me luck. Lefty Writer Posted June 12, 2009 #22 Share Posted June 12, 2009 Oh, it is a lot of fun! (It's also verrrry addictive!) And you really don't need an expensive GPS to do this, either. A "basic" membership at geocaching.com is free.
BaseballMomof4 Posted June 12, 2009 #23 Share Posted June 12, 2009 Oh boy, my husband will love this one!! We don't have an excursion planned for Grand Cayman, so maybe we will get our feet wet there!! I will be checking out the websites you guys suggested!! Lefty Writer Posted June 12, 2009 #24 Share Posted June 12, 2009 There are 3 - 4 caches right in the dock area of Grand Cayman. On our cruise in Oct. of 07, we had to tender in from a different spot, so I didn't get these. They are on my list for this year, though.
