Food in St. Thomas - looking for recommendations

I know, this is a site for cruise passengers, but we'll be visiting St. Thomas for a week at the end of the month, staying at Frenchman's Reef. Have read of places to have a drink and watch the sunset. We have a rental car, so we don't have to worry about taking a taxi.

 

We're looking for some "local" restaurants, (but not in the middle of nowhere). Good food, reasonable prices. Want to experience authentic St. Thomas cuisine.

Local Caribbean food restaurants... you could try Cuzzins or Gladys downtown for lunch while shopping or sightseeing in town. There are a couple food vans close to Vendors Plaza that have pates and johnny cakes - quick to go type local food. Pates are a pasty filled with well seasoned ground beef, or it can be filled with conch or salt fish. Johnny cakes are just the pasty alone more or less, usually you eat it with a peice of fried chicken.

 

At Emerald Beach there is a local restaurant there called Walkers by the Sea. In the same general area is Victor's New Hideout, its up on the hill just before the airport/Emerald Beach, have someone at the hotel show you on a map. You could try these for lunch of dinner.

 

At the airport's main entrance, where you actually turn into the airport main road/parking area - on the opposite side of the corner is a small local food place - usually a lot of taxi drivers hanging out there. Don't remember the name of the place. You can try there for lunch to go, drive down to the little playground by Emerald Beach and sit at a bench over looking Emerald Beach and eat.

Thanks so much for your replies. Our tentative plan is to find the spots on the maps designated as "these are great places to take pictures" during the week. These recommendations will come in handy for our "planning" (although we really like to just make things up as we go along).

Try Jen's Deli in Charlotte Amalie just across from the white gazebo in the park. Nothing fancy but great for lunch. It's where the locals eat. We've gone there both trips now. Good sandwiches and conch fritters. And when the bartender is being creative, nice drinks too.:D Happy 30th!

We've eaten at Glady's cafe 3 times and have loved it each and every time.

 

We've also gone to Fungi's on the beach and love the view here. The food is pretty good and it's an incredibly cool place. I do that they've changed the menu and I'm not thrilled about the changes. But it's a great place to go for a drink.

There's a concierge at the Marriott Frenchman's Reef who can also provide recommendations for you and will make any necessary reservations.

 

The Banana Tree Grille was very nice and has spectacular views overlooking Charlotte Amalie and the harbor.

 

You won't need to take a car taxi to town -- there's a water taxi available from the Marriott that will drop you off near the flea market.

 

Since you're there for a week, don't forget St. John! Mongoose Junction had a nice little outdoor place for lunch. Can't recollect the name, though. :o

Another place to try is Off the Hook in Red Hook. we had a great dinner there and it's on the water. Also, since you are at the Marriott, if you want to splurge, try Havana Blue at Morningstar. Great spot, great food, beautiful view, steep prices!

Thanks to all for your recommendations. Although we didn't make it to all of the places mentioned, we did go to a few:

 

Gladys' - friendliest servers, extremely relaxed atmosphere. Pauline is one of the sweetest people ever. Had breakfast there one day, and lunch another day. Great food, coffee. Reasonable prices.

 

Bumpa's for breakfast one day. Food good. No service to speak of. You go to the counter, place your order, sit down and they call your name when your food is ready for you to pick up. No refills on beverages. Reasonable prices.

 

For us, jaw-dropping prices at Coco Joe's at the Marriott. Food okay but not worth the price they charge.

 

Burgers (1/2 pound) at Paradise Point were okay. Party atmostphere. Prices reasonable. View fabulous.

 

Dinner at Cuzzins - Good food, but they were out of ribs at 4:00 in the afternoon!

 

One more favorite stop of ours was the 19th Hole at Star Jewelers on Main Street. No food. Just drinks. Jean and Harriett were so very helpful with tips on things to see - and the best Bushwackers!!!!!!
